[size=8]TRAIN
The train was going 900ft/34sec slower than you.
That puts the train's speed at about 45.95 mph.

Just reading about Terance Tao Professor of mathematics at UCAL.
Interesting artical. I thought you blokes may enjoy the questions put to the kid when he was 8 years old. Answers are in the artical I linked to. so answer the questions before reading the artical.
Motzart of maths
Some of this artical may have been sourced from the NY times.

On July 16, 1983, a day before Terence Tao's eighth birthday, Ken Clements, an expert on the education of mathematically gifted children, visited the boy's home to evaluate his abilities.

As part of the evaluation, he gave Terry the following set of written questions. Terry answered orally, without writing anything down. All his answers were correct.

QUESTIONS

Two circles have a radii equal to 2cm and 3cm.
The distance between their centres is 4cm. Do they intersect?

What angle does an hour hand describe in 20 minutes?

A can of kerosene weighs 8kg. Half of the kerosene is poured out of it, after which the can weighs 4 1/2kg.

What is the weight of the empty can?

What time is it now if the time which passed since noon constitutes a third of the time that remains until midnight?

I walk from home to school in 30 minutes and my brother takes 40 minutes. My brother left 5 minutes before I did. In how many minutes will I overtake him?

The perimeter of a right-angled triangle is 5cm. Two of its sides are each 2cm long. How long is the third side?

A class received some regular and some special notebooks, and altogether there were 80 notebooks.
A regular notebook costs 20 cents and a special one 10 cents. How many of each kind of notebook did the class receive?

One can argue on some answers, DP.

For example, if two circles which radii equal to 2cm and 3cm are placed 4 cm away from each other in two parallel plans in a tridimensional system, they don't intersect.

DP, thank you for your great post, a real beaut! Cool

For the record I managed five correct, with just one reading of the question. This just goes to show that I am not as smart as an eight year old. However, I still have a few years to catch up!

Francis, what a coincidence; I was only thinking about you yesterday as I sipped wine in the Café de Paris; which is in St Tropez, when I told the waiter, je pense que ce vin a déjà ete bu?

Sorry to say BB was not on the beach!!!

"For example, if two circles which radii equal to 2cm and 3cm are placed 4 cm away from each other in two parallel plans in a tridimensional system, they don't intersect."

You forgot to mention the fact that; if they are drawn whilst travelling at the speed of light, it is also unlikely they would intersect. Although it would also be unlikely you would be able to tell anyone of your findings under such circumstances.

12/19
Every woman is married to one man and vice-versa. So 3/5ths of the women = 2/3rds of the men. So the married population is 3/5W + 2/3M, while the total population is M + W. Also from 3/5W = 2/3M we get M = 9/10W. So we need (3/5W + 2/3M) / (M + W) = (3/5W + 3/5W) / (9/10W + W) = 12/19

[size=7]3/5f=2/3m
f=10/9m
T=f+m=10/9m+m=19/9m
Tmr=3/5f+2/3m=2/3m+2/3m=4/3m
Tmr/T=4/3m/19/9m=(4*9)/(3*19)=12/19

80% is better than 75% Sad

3/5w = 2/3m
find the lowest common numerator (6)
3/5w = 6/10w
2/3m = 6/9m
6w+6m = 12 w&m
(could I just add the 10+9=19 here or do I need to continue like I did below? Here I get 10w & 9m and below I get 9w & 10m??) Confused

3/5w = 2/3m
multiple the above by 15 to get rid of the fractions
45/5w=9w
30/3m=10m
9w+10m= 19 w&m

12/19
