I would like to take a timeout to announce a world first:

Yesterday I posted;

"What is the expected number of random numbers, uniformly distributed from 0 to 1, needed for the sum to be greater than 1"

For the first time EVER a question confounded the viewer. Way to go… me!

A small town in Alaska is approaching winter. Because the soil will soon freeze they need to dig enough graves in the town cemetery now in anticipation of the number of deaths until the ground thaws in spring. The town's population is 1000 and it is assumed that each person has a 1% chance of dying during the winter.

What is the least number of graves should they dig so that the probability of having enough is at least 90% Question

What about 95% Question

And 99% Question

I've been a bit busy lately, but I haven't forgot about this one. I've been mulling over an approach. Don't post the answer yet.

RANDOM NUMBERS
If I had to guess, I would have guessed e, since it pops up everywhere and seems to be in the ballpark. I came up with a method (it involves computing the volumes of hypercubes with corners cut off) that yields e. I didn't get past a 3-D cube, but extrapolated what seemed to be the pattern for the formula.
