I need some answers about my netbook?

even though a netbook has 1gb can you still download stuff on it? because my girlfriend said a netbook isnt for downloading just for the internet but everything i download i delete it.and i have external hard drives and usb hardrives to put stuff on it nothing stays on my netbook.so am i doing anything wrong??
