I need some African silhouettes

Reply Tue 2 Dec, 2003 04:22 pm
I'm in a bit of a crunch. I need some African silhouettes, preferably people, e.g. African women carrying bowls on top of their heads, warriors dancing, that sort of thing.

I transfer the images onto wood, cut them out, attach a base, and have some interesting window art. No worry about copyright infringement.... I do not sell these, simply decorative things to have around the house.

I will be leaving town for a bit so I'd like to get as many of these finished as possible before I leave.

If anyone runs across a nice image on the internet please send me the link.

Greatly appreciated.

Gus

That would probably work, Onyxelle. Send them please.

That wouldn't be conducive for silhouette art. Thanks for the thought.

I'm talking about something like this....

This particular one would present a bit of a challenge because of the dress, but you have an idea what I'm looking for now.

Gus- I don't think that this is EXACTLY what you want, but a few look like it might have some possibilities:

No, Phoenix, those are too three dimensional for my purposes. The outside shape has to be more defined. Thanks for the offer though.

(Actually there is one on that site that I could maybe work with)

To better explain what I'm looking for, let's go back to this example picture...

http://images.allposters.com/images/DEV/JLP266_a.jpg

I would take that image, eliminate the dress, because that wouldn't look right in a silhouette, it would appear that she had spikes or something sticking out of her side, then cut the outline of her body and a square rectangle of wood that would actually still be connected to her feet.

I then make a base, cut a slot in the surface, and insert the rectangle in the slot, so it appears she is standing on the base.

It's a very simple process and the silhouettes on a window ledge look quite nice.

Sometimes I make them out of metal, but for the most part I stick with wood.

Here's another example of silhouette-type art so you have a better idea what I'm doing.

this is very interesting. I don't think that I have seen you post a 'serious' type post since i've been on a2k - and I'm impressed at this type of creativity.

That sounds/looks a lot like the candle holders I (and mrs. hamburger) have.

I'm trying to find pix of them, but in the meantime howsabout something like this ...

Thanks, Phoenix. There is definitely stuff on that site I can use.

Perhaps not for the silhouette project, but I do carvings too.

Of course, there may be some good silhouettes in there, but it's going to take a bit of time to go through it all.

Thanks again.

Well, Onyxelle, I hope I'm not tarnishing my reputation.

Ehbeth, that is almost exactly what I'm looking for. Thank you.

This is more "wire art" or I suppose I could fashion something out of metal, but the dimensions wouldn't work very well for wood. Too fragile.
