Race Equality Secret Service: MEETING - WEDNESDAY 20 JANUARY 2010
Quote:
In a paper published in January 2008 by Progress entitled: ?Inclusive Society: How do we nurture aspiration?? it was stated: ?that a socially mobile society is an inclusive society?.
The rise in unemployment among ethnic minority youth, along with a lack of opportunity; the lack of access to higher education; dearth of role-models in the media and politics is a concern in both countries. One element of the discussion will be the various models in which diversity has been more or less achieved:
the British model of multiculturalism.
the French model of integration.
the American model of Affirmative Action.
Is there a new model, one better suited to the challenges of a post-industrial society of citizens who are increasingly becoming ?knowledge nomads? and whose origins are outside of the country of their birth? Or is talk of models unhelpful? Is simply allowing each culture to respond to living together in its own way enough? Or can we learn from successful examples of other models? This will be discussed within the contexts of employment, education and citizenship.
