Recently, I encouraged friends to try something different from the usual Caribbean cruise at Christmas time and come to southern California. My search for classical music concerts, theatre and dance performances for them to attend turned up nothing but holiday-related fare, with almost every venue either dark or presenting some child-oriented holiday programme.

A Time to Choose: Caribbean Development in the 21st Century
The Caribbean region is at a development crossroads and its member nations must take significant and concrete steps to improve productivity and competitiveness and face up to a more global competition if they are to accelerate or even maintain past growth, says a new World Bank report. By taking such steps, they will reposition themselves strategically as an emerging trading bloc for goods and services; without such action, they risk growing economic marginalization and erosion of many of the social gains of the last three decades.

The sunniness is now extinguished. The mood at this promo concert for new album Rated R was dark and aggressive. Beamed worldwide on the internet, it was her first headline appearance since being beaten up by pop-star boyfriend Chris Brown in February. According to police reports, Brown bit Rihanna, put her in a headlock and punched her in the face. Like Tina Turner, another victim of domestic abuse, she?s responded in feisty fashion ? ie by recruiting a rock band and turning up the decibels.
The British government took matters into its own hands following a Foreign Office report which found "clear signs of political amorality and immaturity and of a general administrative incompetence" within the island nation's parliament.

RESS COMMANDOS
Quote:
In the militaries of most countries, commandos are distinctive in that they specialise in assault on conventional military targets. This is in contrast to other special forces units, which specialise in counter-terrorism, reconnaissance, and sabotage. However, the term commando is sometimes used in relation to units carrying out the latter tasks (including some civilian police units).

The United States is massively building up its potential for nuclear and non-nuclear strikes in Latin America and the Caribbean by acquiring unprecedented freedom of action in seven new military, naval and air bases in Colombia. The development ? and the reaction of Latin American leaders to it ? is further exacerbating America's already fractured relationship with much of the continent.

" . . . . . .The White Witch was Annie Mae Pattinson, who was born in England but was schooled in voodoo during her formative years, which were spent in Haiti. She moved into Rose Hall in 1820 when she married the owner, John Rose Palmer. Within 11 years, she had seized control of the plantation and murdered her first, second and third husbands, while also dispatching countless slaves whom she had taken as lovers. She met her end when she was strangled in 1831 by a former slave who was enraged that Annie had killed his grand-daughter in a jealous love-match over the plantation book-keeper. . . . . . . "
