The Little Old Racist Lady And Her Black Friends Next Door
by Polar Levine for Yankin' The Food Chain, Polarity1.com

In the run-up to the primaries I enjoyed weekly debates with one of my close pals. He was positive that Guiliani would be the next Pres. I responded that our ex-mayor was too socially liberal for the Republican base and too ugly for everyone else. My guess was that Obama would be the guy. During the '04 Dem convention when I watched Obama cruise up to the podium like a young Smokey Robinson and croon like a superstar, I said, "That's the next president." Actually I thought it would be another four years down the road. My friend was dead sure that America would never vote for an African-American; we were too racist and too stupid. But I disputed that argument over the course of the entire election drama. My rationale was based on one little old lady from New Jersey.

Betty is 83, a daughter of immigrants and raised in a blue-collar suburb of Boston. She was programmed with all the racial stereotypes and resentments that were unmitigated by the social stigmatization of racists that prevailed half a century later. Her son, a long-time friend of mine, told me how his mom freaked when he brought home an African-American friend in first grade. "Never bring him around here again. Never!" He experienced the same tirade over his black girlfriends in high school and much later well into adulthood.

Pretty shocking, huh? Actually to me it was really shocking because I always loved Betty. When I was in high school she was funny and generous -- the favorite of the moms and the favorite aunt of my friend's cousins. How could such poison inhabit a sweetheart like Betty who let her freak-flag waving son's freshly painted and scrubbed bedroom walls become a canvas for his friends' obscene radical graffiti? Those walls were left untouched when he left for college, and the room was not re-painted until the family moved to a house a few blocks away. It's easy to imagine decent, smart people harboring some latent form of relatively benign racism -- i.e. never expressed in a punitive way. But Betty made it clear that any person of a minority background whose skin was darker than Betty's could be subjected to humiliation. Betty was never struck by the ironic fact of her own minority status. She was a typical product of a pre-Freudian, pre-irony generation and culture.

That was before a black family moved in next door some time in the Eighties. I laughed till I almost suffocated when I was told.

A decade later she told me about how she offered to house that same family, by then her favorite neighbors, when their home was destroyed by a fire and how depressed she was when they moved. Turns out Betty had never actually interacted with blacks or Latinos before; had never known that middle class versions of "them" existed. And I watched her yuk it up with the African-American guests at my friend's wedding. Sixty years of programming was erased virtually overnight. And last month when she told me she was voting for Barack Obama, her tone was as matter-of-fact as if she's said she was going to the dentist on November four.

While all the infoheads were spouting on the Bradley Effect, I knew that over the course of a full generation millions of people like Betty saw the darker skinned "others" on TV, in the movies, in the neighborhoods, in the doctors' offices, in the supermarkets, at their children's and grandchildren's birthday parties and school plays. They've also been getting used to gays and probably will be voting against bans on gay marriage when Obama is running for his second term.

There are millions of other Bettys out there who will do America proud. It may take an imminent cataclysm or one of "them" moving in next door, but I have this faith-based trust in Betty. She's the change I can believe in.

@bwsmile,
Because there can be a TV station called Black Entertainment Television, but if there were one called White Entertainment Television the world would be turned on it's ear. The ONLY reason Obamanation won is because he is (part) black. He was the least qualified of all the applicants, and if he looked like John Edwards, he would be standing next to him in teh unemployment line.

@bwsmile,
What does Betty have to do with America being ready for Obama?
Obama does not represent black America. He won't provide his birth certificate to be sure he's American. He has offered no solutions other than change. So far his change is looking like American's money changing from their pockets to the government's pockets. Besides American or not, he's white. At least half and his black side had little to nothing to do with raising him. He's simply shrewd. You suckers.

The birth cert BS was laid to rest quite some time ago. You can take the tinfoil hat off now. His on-file cert has been examined and found to be authentic (as well as making him American). If you don't believe that, ask the governor of Hawaii or the Hawaii dept of Health (who just so happened to verify that they both have the cert and that it is 100% real-deal).

But here's the neatest part... he doesn't have to! So there's a nice steaming cup of STFU waiting for you to chug down with that conspiracy theory of yours.

And of final note... our money has been changing from our pockets to the government's for quite some time. It's just that it's been changing over to the Iraqi's government, not ours.

Sounds like somebody's a sore loser. Keep crying, your tears are delicious!

HONOLULU (AP) _ State officials say there's no doubt Barack Obama was
born in Hawaii.

Health Department Director Dr. Chiyome Fukino said Friday she and the
registrar of vital statistics, Alvin Onaka, have personally verified
that the health department holds Obama's original birth certificate.

Fukino says that no state official, including Republican Gov. Linda
Lingle, ever instructed that Obama's certificate be handled
differently.

She says state law bars release of a certified birth certificate to
anyone who does not have a tangible interest.

I don't believe you. I can't ask the governor. I don't know him. Be so kind as to guide me to a mainstream media effort to prove the statement.
And you're right, he doesn't have to, nor would he be allowed to at this point. No one in their right mind would allow him to expose the stupidity of the people. Real neat.

2. Are you exposing a hatred for anyone other than "American"?
Do you not believe that the freedom of the Iraqi people is important? Or that they not live day to day in terror of a tyrant? Are the people of Dafur worthy of American lives and dollars?

Not a sore loser. I am glad America chose a black president. Just wish it had been JC Watts or Allen Keyes.
But, I must say, losing to Obama isn't like losing to Clinton or most Demos. They at least believe in the American way.
We are in for changes. Big changes. And the only thing good about it is if you believe that lowering peoples standard of living is what is meant by "equalising". It has nothing to do with "raising up" anybody from poverty.

You want a mainstream effort? How about the United States government? You know, the same one that let him RUN for president? I'm quite certain that they would have caught on to him not being a citizen just by throwing his hat into the ring. The same people who actually verified his citizenship.

Did I mention the governor is a Republican? Ooh, that's gotta smart.

How much has been done about Darfur? How about Zimbabwe? Why aren't we tearing into their borders? OH!!! PAKISTAN!!! Isn't that where there's a dictator that is performing his own "cleansing" and thwarting democracy?

Yet... no help from America. Makes me wonder what they don't have which the places we have invaded does.

One of these things is not like the other...

If by that you mean making you rich on the backs of the middle class, then no... you're in for an awfully painful surprise. Your days of "get rich quick" schemes are over.

Tell me, exactly what is your definition of "The American Way"? This I have to hear.

1. In what forum did the U.S. government share the certificate with the public?
I simply wish to view it.

2. In my defense of the war, I was also defending the idea that the U.S. and others should become involved in nations where gross injustice is being practiced such as Darfur and Zimbabwe. I was asking you if you consider non-Americans worthy of our lives and efforts. Answer.

3. What a joke. You think that because Obama is the president that people will no longer pursue riches? Or that Obama will attempt to prevent them from their pursuit? Socialist are stupid. But, those who get to become the leaders, aren't that stupid. They know that the motivated and the imaginative are the ones that make the world tick and are the life blood of the sap suckers that they, the saviors, make their promises to.
The American way? CAPITALISM............without it, we're nothing more than the mediocrity that Europe has become. Slugs.

Tough ****. You can't view ANYBODY's certificate because you "simply want to view it". Try it. Go to your local DVS and ask for a random person's birth cert. They'll laugh at you the same way I am.

When it is the people we are defending and not the resources, yes... which obviously not the case, otherwise we'd have invaded in Darfur and Zimbabwe. Why didn't we deal with THESE dictators and cleansers?

Answer.

Now, your turn bucko... are non-Americans more worthy of our lives and efforts than we are? How many people are STILL homeless due to Katrina? How many people have been affected by the spill in Tennessee? How many homeless people and unaided veterans do we have? How many people starve on OUR streets?

Answer.

Now when did I say that? Conservatives are stupid.

What I said is that you won't get away with your "deregulation" (read: removing the laws) any longer. You know... the laws which were implemented to prevent exactly what happened.

So the American way in your opinion is getting rich and leaving the country a dead hulk. That is what your DEREGULATED CAPITALISM has wrought.

1. When someone wants to be an official in the U.S. system, his personal information should be open. Especially when there is a question concerning that. You still haven't provided the forum in which he produced this proof as you proclaimed he had done.
2. What good have Iraq's resources done for America?
I can not answer why America has not intervened to stop the genocides occurring. Neither the left or right in America have considered it. I am disappointed. But, that must be a multi-national effort.
3. How many people are still homeless because of Katrina? What does that have to do with anything? What do the homeless have to do with anything? You think it is the business of the people of America to provide homes for the homeless? Why? If that's what you think give some your home.
4. Everything you say suggest that you think the government is the answer to all problems.
De-regulation is the right way. Prosecution of criminals is the answer to crooked businessmen who create victims.
Getting rich has nothing to do with leaving a nation a dead hulk. What country are you living in? America is no where near dead. America is fine and will stay that way. Especially when the people realize that all democrats or all republicans in power is a serious mistake. Surviving the next two years will be tough with the socialist in power, but we'll get through it and re-balance the power.

Yeah, if you're an official, you get to see it. That's part of your job. We citizens can't "just view" that information. It's called "confidential". The whole right to privacy thing.

The forum he produced this proof is called "The United States Government". You don't think they check this stuff? Oh yes they do. Even to get close to the hot seat, you've gotta pass all the tests. The Hawaii department of Health officials verified his physical certificate on file for the governor of Hawaii (a Rep. by the way) and she said "Good enough, case closed." just as if anyone else's proof of citizenship was required.

He has provided that proof. You are just not privvy to it. Get used to this fact.

Deregulation is wrong. It's like ripping up all the speed limit signs and calling it "deregulating the streets", then expecting everybody to obey the speed that was originally posted.

You forget that we're human. Not a good idea.

Sucking this country dead is the new and hip way to get rich. Not to mention fast. Did you know that Alaska (Hi, Sarah!) sells more natural gas (that thing she was championing) to foreign countries than it sells domestically? All because it sells for twice the amount?

And we're having a bit of a problem with energy at the moment... classy.

1. In reality, the only official whose birth place was "ever" in question is Obama. But, I'll let this go. You are the one who made the statement that he "had" proved this point and then would or could not provide the evidence then used confidentiality as a parachute. And of course, he's gotten away with it. So, you're right. lol
2. I must agree that Iraq is a great place to have a base. Considering that Iran has every intention of destroying our ally Israel. We can hammer their asses from Iraq.
3. That may be true. But the blame for that can not be pinned to America. What about the dis-interest of the other nations of the world?
4. Why? Americans who go through difficult times have resources available to them. Sometimes they do not know how to access these resources. But, often they prefer to blame others than investigate the process.
Those people I referred to have no alternatives which to me, make them more worthy of efforts by America.
5. Bernie will be occupying a cell. But, he is not representative of the rich in America. He's simply a scoundrel who was very good at sales.
Existing "law" is the answer to white crime. Just as it is to the rampant gang violence and illegal immigration. Government "regulation" is simply the door to totalitarianism. Existing law would work if the authorities would simply enforce it.
It's not like tearing down speed limit signs. De-regulation allows the market to flow naturally instead of false props which always fail. Just as the recent bailouts will fail. "Human" to me means we should allow the people to take the risk and profit or suffer the consequence of failure without a government to intervene. Government is evil. It steals to achieve everything it offers to "give" from the strivers and the achievers of our nation.

6. Your suggestion that "sucking this country dead" is an absurd exaggeration. The pursuit of wealth by legal and ethical efforts does not make people bad. They, in their efforts put many, many people to work. Creating many opporitunities for people who do not have the drive or imagination or resources to achieve wealth on their own. Which makes them great Americans. No, not just great Americans. Great examples for the world to learn from. If they can get past their petty jealousies.

By the way, natural gas is not something you can simply package up and sell to the highest bidder. So, the customer you must be referring to must be Canada. Installation of pipelines is a lengthy tumultuous process. The cost involved is exorbitant. Passing gas to the north deserves a high price.
If you sell pop cycles, no one should be able to tell you who to sell them to. Besides, Palin owns no pipleine companies and can not dictate who they sell their product to.

So, the customer you are referring to must be Canada. They need gas too.

@bwsmile,
This thread has to do with "why America is ready for Obama. The only thing that makes them ready for Obama is blind ignorance. This person, has surrounded himself with anti-Americans all of his life. Dropping them like hot potatoes, one by one, dis-avowing his loyalty to them as each association was challenged. This person, cares for nothing and no-one. "POWER" is his goal and he has duped the willing dopes into handing it to him. He will enjoy the ride. He will blame "all" of his failures on Bush. It will be interesting to see his ire in action "if" the press ever challenges him.

I will literally give you my salary if you can provide beyond the shadow of a doubt evidence that Obama's birth certificate is invalid.

Remember, YOU make the claim, YOU must provide evidence to back it up. There's no "Prove me wrong!" here.

Of course, if such evidence existed, and it were anywhere near credible, Obama wouldn't have been voted into office. The gov't would not allow it.

The US Government has proven that Obama is a US citizen. They reviewed the certificate and found it to be valid. Case closed. Unless you have evidence of the contrary, please drink from the STFU cup. Its brew runneth over.

Ah, you mean the guys who have concentrated citizens and complain that they shoot back? That Israel? Wonder why people are pissed.

One little tidbit: Iran does not have the technology to attack Israel with a nuclear weapon. They do, however, have the ability to attack Iraq with one.

That's about two steps from a solid incursion which could tip the scales in the Middle East. Sure, fire a nuke back, but be ready for a LOT of people with a LOT of nukes to do the same just because the party's rocking.

Wait.

Let me follow your logic.

The blame cannot be pinned on America for not putting forth an effort to stop a blood soaked dictator (Zimbabwe, Pakistan)... but the blame can be pinned on other countries, i.e. France, for not putting forth an effort to stop a blood soaked dictator (Iraq)?

Or was that not the reason for "Freedom Fries" and "Freedom Toast"?

This is OUR country. We provide for US first. If we are in disrepair and cannot help ourselves, how do you expect us to help others?

The homeless? How about being American Citizens, is that worthy enough? Or are you being a lockstep conservative and only thinking "me, me, me" again?

So that's why his house arrest was reinstated AFTER he started parting his goods? Yeah... right.

What you fail to miss is that deregulation REMOVED LAWS. Things like the Glass-Steagall Act. (Read it) Laws cannot work if they are removed.

That is what deregulation is... removal of laws. Because we all know that laws get in the way of things. Like murder. Or rape.

Pursuit of legal wealth is just fine. However that isn't what has been happening. Look at ol Bernie again. How about Ken Lay? Charles Keating? How about we ask the people what opportunities these men have made.

When you evade taxes, produce elaborate schemes, pump your stock, dump cash into offshore accounts and send jobs to other countries, you ARE sucking this country dead. You need to pay attention to things called responsibilities.

The customer I am speaking of is Japan, as well as the vast majority of Asia.

Palin cannot dictate the natural gas flow? Then why'd she stump it to much during the campaign? Taking about how her state produces, what was it, 20 percent of our natural energy resources I do believe it was.

You can't package natural gas and sell it to the highest bidder???

What's that?

And what is that?

Here's a hint: LNG stands for "Liquefied Natural Gas"

Oh, one more...

There's the same thing on something called a "cargo ship".

1. The accusation was made. Once it was made, Obama should have obliged the accusers by producing it. He wasn't placed on trial, thus, the burden of proof is on no one. A simple matter of making it available. A courtesy if you will. But, all that aside, "you" are the one who has stated that he has proven this. All I need from you is the forum he used to expose the truth.

2. Israel is kicking Palestinian ass because Palestinians stand by docilely as thugs fire mortars at innocent Jews.
Iran needs to keep in mind your advise.

3. Americans have it made by any one's standards.
I don't really care what the french do. They'd simply screw it up. But, being an arm chair quarterback attempting to pass judgment on the U.S. earns them spit from me. But, any other nation should consider put their money where their mouth is. The U.S.makes mistakes. But, just like on your job, the only ones who make mistakes are those who actually work.
The people I'm talking about don't know if they will live through this day or be able to eat. There is nothing to eat. And the odds of them not being shot are not great either.

What the hell makes you think the U.S. is in disrepair? Because Obama conducted his candidacy on lies? Working damn hard to convince Americans how bad off they are? Leftist bull crap.

Leftist are the ones thinking "me, me, me". Why do you think obama got elected? He is their hope of getting something for nothing.

4. In the end, Bernie will pay.
5. What I fail to miss?????lol
Half the laws on the books are not enforced. Making them worthless.
De-regulation means "the absence of government" a wonderful thing.
6. I "would" rather any one of the afore mentioned criminals running business than to look to a government to attempt to fix anything.
Government is sooo inefficient at everything and bogs down everything it touches. Of course I'm kidding. The afore mentioned people got their just desserts in the long run. As justice prevailed. Once government becomes the master of our business, they'll make excuses for their criminals such as the clown they are placing in charge of the IRS even after realizing that he "mistakenly" did not pay his taxes for years. Does this mean we'll all get forgiveness for our memory lapses?
7. Good advise for those who are erasing capitalism for socialism, heh?
They are off to a good start, wouldn't you say?
8. Yes, Palin credited "her state". She did not sell the product.
By the way, excellent job of proving your packaging point.
But, the product does not belong to any government to decide who it can be sold to. Nor should it.
