@g-man,
Faith based initiatives give pushing ideology a federal backing.

@Fatal Freedoms,
They can get money, as long as they don't spend it on missions or teaching their religion. If they're doing something good with it, fine. If they're spreading the word, that's where the line is drawn. Easy compromise.

Why should a non governmental establishment be entitled to any money whether it's for good or not?

Essentially the church has it's own income and pays taxes, if they then receive money back from the government then why pay taxes in the first place?

Personally no church should receive any benefit from the government however if they are then this quote should bring some good news to other groups looking for cash.

@Numpty,
I find Faith based initiatives troubling,while this may well be a more cost effective system the temptation to abuse these funds should be a concern to all.So much depends on the "details" and oversight.

Research. Community outreach. Things like that. Sure, the religious aren't out to do any research, but if they want to lend a hand and not a sermon, I'm for it.

The same reason a research institute does. Grants and such for things that the government needs to get done.

No church should receive any benefit that another institute capable of doing the same work is not able to receive. If they have a reason for needing government cash (to do gov't work), then they are permitted to use it. But they must keep the preaching out of anything they do with said cash.

@Fatal Freedoms,
Why do you folks suspect that the president did this?

Because everyone needs to roll up their sleeves and get to work. This includes the religious.

It's my understanding that churches are exempt from paying taxes unless they become political.

Well, our friend Numpty is not from the United States. So it may be different in the UK. But you would be correct.
