Actually there was a bit of hope util they drove him out of Mecca. There are Meccan verses, which could have developed a mildly okay religion, and Medinan verses, which were more violent (Medina verses also cancel out any semi-peaceful rhetoric from Mecca.)

Theirs is the way of violence and backwardness. They can't win. They won't win. The question is how many of us will die proving that to them?
