Three very good guesses, but all of them wrong.

Hint: In this movie, the actor on the right (you obviously know who he is, LW, but I won't give it away in case anyone else is still guessing) reprises a role that he played in a previous movie, while the actor on the left appeared in that same earlier movie but in a different role.

Not "The Human Monster."

But there is a "monster" in this movie, played by the son of another actor who often portrayed "monsters."

Yes! It is "The Ghost of Frankenstein."

Bela Lugosi (on the right) reprised his role as "Ygor" from the film "Son of Frankenstein," in which Lionel Atwill (on the left) played the police inspector who had his arm ripped off by the "Monster" as a child (this is the role that Kenneth Mars hilariously spoofed in "Young Frankenstein").

This was the first Universal "Frankenstein" movie that did not have Boris Karloff in the role of the Monster. Instead, Lon Chaney Jr. played the role for the one and only time in his career.

That's actually Sir Cedrick Hardwick on the left, isn't it? I wasn't past my first cup of coffee but that's what clued me into the answer.

(They were both in the film, but Hardwick was Dr. Frankenstein)

I'm pretty sure it's Lionel Atwill, but they both were sporting those pencil-thin mustaches for this picture, so I'm not absolutely certain.

They both looked alike when they got older -- I could easily be wrong. It's just that I suddenly beamed onto Sir Cedric and that was the film he was in with Bela and Lon. Those Universal horror flicks become a blur and I haven't revisited most of them since twenty years ago. Especially the camp ones of the 40's (the war seemed to prompt Universal to lighten up -- remember we were eventually treated to Abbott and Costello's best movie, "....Meets Frankenstein." The scene in the warehouse where they first encounter the monsters is still good for a laugh.

No, not "Superfly."

I have a feeling this is a tough one so I'm going to say it is a foreign film and the director is quite well know.
