Bush Targets Iran in Speech, Implies Military Action

Though President Bush's national address Wednesday night was about Iraq, his most provocative comments focused on her neighbor, Iran.

Early in his speech Bush raised the matter of Iran, suggesting that if U.S. efforts to secure Iraq failed, "Iran would be emboldened in its pursuit of nuclear weapons."

Bush blamed both Syria and Iran in helping radical insurgents within Iraq.

"These two regimes are allowing terrorists and insurgents to use their territory to move in and out of Iraq," he said.

@Drnaline,
... and while he gave that speech U.S. forces stormed the Iranian Embassy,
took captive 4 Iranians invited to Iraq by the Iraqi government who immediately
called for their release, and got it.

I think he might just alienate the present Iraqi government, and have them
openly ask us just to leave, and solve the whole thing.

The current Iraqi government doesn't have a DAMN thing to cry about. We got them their power. The very least they can do is work with us. I am sick of it being us that has to please the Iraqi government. How about we go over there and lay it down. You do x, y or z or we get the hell out of here and they probably end up dead at the hands of the many different groups that want power.

People are so stupid in our government. We let the Iraqi's push us around. It's pathetic.

@Drnaline,
In his speech , Bush hinted at just that . Supposedly the fighting troops will have a green light to prosecute the war in a more effective fashion . That is the crux of Bush's new direction , more troops , more leeway in rules of engagement , and a real commitment from Iraq to step up and become more capable of controlling the insurgency .

@Drnaline,
I hope your right. It seems to always turn out to be less than most expectations.

@Drnaline,
read Andrew Sullivan's analysis of the speech and the new direction

http://time.blogs.com/daily_dish/2007/01/the_speech.html

and read this

http://time.blogs.com/daily_dish/2007/01/meanwhile_in_ba.html

A Shiite political leader who has worked closely with the Americans in the
past said the Bush benchmarks appeared to have been drawn up in the
expectation that Mr. Maliki would not meet them. "He cannot deliver the
disarming of the militias," the politician said, asking that he not be named
because he did not want to be seen as publicly criticizing the prime minister.
"He cannot deliver a good program for the economy and reconstruction. He
cannot deliver on services. This is a matter of fact. There is a common
understanding on the American side and the Iraqi side."

Actually, we should do that from Israel to Saudi Arabia. Seriously.

You people work it out, meet these conditions, learn to live in tolerance and
have just societies with equal opportunity for all or we're done with you.

That's the Fukuyama rethink on the neo-con foreign policy agenda, and I
agree with him.

Yes to all of Sullivans last four questions on the first link. As for the annonymous politician claiming something "appears" to be done a certain way. Proof still awaits to be presented. You think an anonymous person can and will prove such and accusation? Or will he wait twenty years for a good book deal? How trustworthy is a story coming from an individual who is not willing to put his name on it in the first place? Don't give me that "whistle blower" crap either. So given the story line i would not be inclined to believe much of it.
On Sullivans second end remark. "If this is the case, this president is lying to us once again. It's one lie too far. "
Nobody has proven he lied/mislead the first time. You know deliberately?

@Drnaline,
one need only go over to youtube and search for speeches where he
contradicts himself over and over.

You seem to be someone who will blindly follow 'til the end, regardless of
what evidence shows you're marching over a cliff, and I guess that's all there
is to it.

Contradictions to you are lies? How many times have you contradicted yourself? Were you lieing every time? My faith is my own just like yours is, it need not include religion but it is faith none the less.
On a second note. When i march over a cliff i usually have a hang gliders straped to my back. And with luck have a very uplifting flight, tend to see things from a different prospective when i'm up there.

Not blind, just persistent. I find it humorous how you and oleo can write off a discussion with one swipe of "blind faith" and not see your lack of conviction in trying to sway what i believe in, what you perpetrate as the truth. I am not blind, you failed to sway me otherwise. Does not mean i am right and you are wrong or viseversa.
