Media "spin"

This article on MSNBCdot com, is an example of spin by the media. Some of us know that the vast majority of readers don't get past the headline of a story, so they are lead by the headline to think only one way.
The headline of this story is-
"Deadliest Year for US in Iraq"
That statement is true, but reading the complete article will enlighten the reader that the number of deaths has declined monthly, especially since the beginning of the surge, and the years between 2004 and 2007 were lower than other years. Why not have a headline that reflects a positive spin?

Quote:
At least 852 American military members died in Iraq in 2007, compared with 850 troops in 2004. That year saw mostly larger, more conventional battles like the campaign to cleanse Fallujah of Sunni militants in November, and U.S. clashes with Shiite militiamen in the sect's holy city of Najaf in August.

What do the naysayers have to counter these facts?

@Curmudgeon,
It's not spin at all, it's fact that isn't sugarcoated.

This year has in fact been the deadliest, there isn't any amiguity there, and therefore, no room for spin. The article lists WHY it was the deadliest inside, how would you rather they title it? "Deadliest Year for US In Iraq due to the Troop Surge, Large Conventional Battles, and....." see how that is pointless? I would also argue that those with loved ones in that country don't care WHY people are dying, they only care that they ARE dying, and in higher numbers than previous years.

@Curmudgeon,
The point was that though this year was a few deaths worse than 2004, they refused to point out in the headline that the deaths have been going down since the surge began. The point of my post was that the media uses headlines to attract readers who don't look past the headline, and thus are missing good news.
