Sharp Drop Seen in US Deaths in Iraq
By STEVEN R. HURST ? 5 hours ago

Quote:
BAGHDAD (AP) ? October is on course to record the second consecutive decline in U.S. military and Iraqi civilian deaths and Americans commanders say they know why: the U.S. troop increase and an Iraqi groundswell against al-Qaida and Shiite militia extremists.

Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch points to what the military calls "Concerned Citizens" ? both Shiites and Sunnis who have joined the American fight. He says he's signed up 20,000 of them in the past four months.

"I've never been more optimistic than I am right now with the progress we've made in Iraq. The only people who are going to win this counterinsurgency project are the people of Iraq. We've said that all along. And now they're coming forward in masses," Lynch said in a recent interview at a U.S. base deep in hostile territory south of Baghdad. Outgoing artillery thundered as he spoke.

Lynch, who commands the 3rd Infantry Division and once served as the military spokesman in Baghdad, is a tireless cheerleader of the American effort in Iraq. But the death toll over the past two months appears to reinforce his optimism. The question, of course: Will it last?

As of Tuesday, the Pentagon reported 28 U.S. military deaths in October. That's an average of about 1.2 deaths a day. The toll on U.S troops hasn't been this low since March 2006, when 31 soldiers died ? an average of one death a day.

In September, 65 U.S. soldiers died in Iraq.

@Curmudgeon,
I'd rather we pull out tomorrow, but if this lunacy of a foreign policy MUST continue until Iraq is "stable", I'm all for less violence and more Iraqi involvement. Plus, I like the idea of US soldiers coming home in well enough shape to defend THEIR country, as opposed to fighting for the Iraqis.

@Curmudgeon,
We have to remain steadfast in our direct, armed opposition to radical Islam. This is of paramount importance, and constitutes the ultimate fight of this generation. At stake is our very existence. The patriots of Western Civilization must take sole responsibility for saving it in these troubled times. The traitors amongst us will only lead us down the path of self-destruction if we grant them political power. No, our calling is to rescue Christian Civilization from the clutches of this goliathan evil called RADICAL ISLAM. Our next fight will be with China, an awakening, uncivilized giant. And remember -- our first step toward self-annihilation is loss of faith in, and lack of commitment to, THE WESTERN CHRISTIAN NATION. Onward, Christian soldiers.

What?

We have more of an attack on our freedoms from the Pat Robertson, Focus on Family James dobson Dominionists than ANY phantom radical religious group....

I fear the American Evangelical a lot more than any foreign group. Our next fight SHOULD be against those who are tearing down our constitution and heading us for bankruptcy as a nation....Bush, republicans and evangelicals...:FU1:

@Whatever cv,
It also figures, Pinochet 73, that you'd support a good friend of the Bush family..the Chilean dictator Pinochet who tortured his people with the help and funding of Bush...

You have no idea how much more miserable you'd be under Sharia Law. You'd really hate life then.

You've got your presidents mixed up. It was Nixon. Nixon. Not Bush.
