Sincere commiserations to her.. tough, tough work.

Gotta run now. Heading up the country for the day. Running around the place getting organized ..

Surprised

Twisted Evil

Surprise development in the house speaker saga.

Don't you just love seeing Abbott outmaneuvered like this?

I have never heard of "Mr Slipper" prior to now. (It certainly looks like something's rotten in the state of Qld for the Coalition!)

Quote:
LABOR has ambushed the federal opposition by snaring Queensland Liberal MP Peter Slipper to be its candidate for Deputy Speaker — providing a dramatic foretaste of the uncertainty of a hung Parliament.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott was taken by surprise by the nomination of Mr Slipper, who went on to beat the Coalition candidate, the Nationals’ Bruce Scott, 78-71 in a secret vote of federal MPs.

One Coalition MP broke ranks over the move and voted for Mr Slipper, along with Labor MPs and independents.

Senior opposition MPs were furious at what they saw as Mr Slipper’s betrayal. But at a party meeting last night, Mr Abbott appealed to his MPs not to react against Mr Slipper.

Mr Abbott’s plea reflected fears that if Mr Slipper is ostracised, he might do a ‘‘pairing deal’’ with Labor to give it an extra number in the House. ...

The first day of the new parliament.
From last night's 7:30 Report.
A "strange new era", indeed.

The 43rd parliament opened in Canberra today and Tony Abbott has warned Julia Gillard she needs to honour all election promises despite her fragile hold on a minority government. The Government has successfully used its numbers to nominate Liberal Peter Slipper as Deputy Speaker, upsetting Tony Abbott's choice.

Tony is not even making sense any more. First they're an illegitimate government, and then they don't have a mandate, then we'll be the most obstructive opposition ever, now they have to deliver on their promises, but pairing is out. When is he going to choose a story (or a lie) and stick to it?

Hockey trying to be a cuddly bear and suggest that Tony wasn't being nasty on 7PM project last night was a little ludicrous.

So you've noticed the contradictions, hinge? Wink

When/if he finds a story or lie which actually works, maybe?

My hunch is, if he continues to aggressively pursue an early election by obstructing the government at every opportunity, then it will work against the Coalition at the next election (early or not).
I think people will tire of his antics & that there'll be a backlash.
Sure, it was a close election & the government won by only a very slim majority. But the purpose of the parliament is for the government of the day to be able to govern. If he distorts that purpose to pursue a negative agenda which which suits only the Libs' political ambitions, people are going to become very, very annoyed. There are so many important issues the government need to address, some urgently. You can't treat the country's parliament with such opportunistic disrespect & expect the electorate to believe you're a respectable alternative government. The dirt will stick.

What she said.

I voted green. Next time it will be a vote for Labour in protest at the lib/coalitions obstructionist policys.

@dadpad,
I'll probably vote green again and assign my own prefs. What we need is the swingers in 07 to labor, who swung back to LNP, to swing back again. A vote moving from the greens to labor won't worry Tony too much. Sadly.

We don't get too many Ozzians in the Tony camp on these boards, except for the occasionally bungee whinger, so I can't ask anyone who voted Lib how they feel about it right now.

Last night on telly news a state independent in Brisbane said he was disgusted at the Tony antics, but why he said that apart from getting his face on tv is unknown.

@hingehead,
We also need those deliberate "informal" voters (thanks, Latham Rolling Eyes ) to vote with more care next time. I'll bet quite a few regret having done it now, given the election result. That was quite a sizable number of voters. They might have made a difference in some of the closely contested seats.

I'd vote exactly the same way next time: Greens.
I plan to do that at our (Vic) state election, too.

@msolga,
And we don't need any more electors telling lies three days out from the polls (or ALP candidates responding appallingly) so that Wyatt Roy can sneak in...

@hingehead,
Yes, I missed it completely. But then, I'm a "southerner". Wink
Heard nothing of it here at all.

I think it highlights the stupidity of the electorate

Or the manipulation of this "story" by certain media interests who used it for all it was worth, hinge?

It is indeed bizarre. Me, I can't quite believe that the father was quite so innocent, myself. Why would you make such unfounded statements, so publicly, in the last minutes of an election campaign, if they were entirely unfounded? Confused

@hingehead,
I would have loved to have seen a more "unfettered" Penny. The real Penny, for a change. She hasn't exactly had the opportunity to shine, has she?
Under Rudd she sounded like Penny on Mogadon.
Under Julia, she came out with a timely (for Julia) statement about supporting marriages only between men & women.
She's had a bit of a rough trot, poor woman!

(Pardon this digression, but ..) I am a wee bit distracted from federal "issues" at this minute.
I'm rather preoccupied with what is going on in the state of Victoria. I fear that we've become a police state. (I'm serious.)
I'm so gobsmacked, I can't even bring myself to write a letter to the editor right now. (A very bad sign. Neutral )
We have an election coming up soon & there isn't anything resembling a half-decent opposition. Very depressing. So, of course, I will be voting for the Greens. (Who are considered The Enemy by our (Labor) state government.) But something is very rotten in the state of Victoria! These are just the tip of the iceberg ... :

I'm responding to RJB's post. Which I can't find now. Never mind, here's my response anyway. :

Quote:
But I did think of you Aussies today when I saw a video clip of some Aus TV show (on Rupert's network) wherein the hostess announced the wrong winner in some beauty contest.
I found that amusing apropos your politics.

Ha, Spot on, RJB! Confused

You'd think a minority government had never, ever existed before, in any other country on the planet (say nothing of Oz), wouldn't you? Neutral

It's going to be a war of nerves for this federal Labor government, that's very clear. Just seeing out the full term, is no 1 challenge. But I think things might improve around the middle of next year when the newly elected Greens (especially) take up their senate positions. (Giving Labor more support in the upper house than with the current senate) I suspect the Abbott Plan might be to force an early election before then.
