@Eorl,
Oh I'm not, Eorl. I'm just enjoying the spectacle of Abbott getting more & more shrill after declaring he'd run a "kinder & gentler" government than Labor. Julia G looks quite relaxed & comfortable by contrast.

@msolga,
Yes, that's exactly my take.

The Real Abbott is inside yelling "For SHITS SAKE, I've been hiding in here for MONTHS, I need to get out and SMACK SOME HEADS TOGETHER ALREADY. But instead I've got to toady to these PISSANTS! gimme a freakin' BREAK!!!"

While the clever Abbott is saying "shut up! If they see even s glimpse of you, it's over"

Another update. This makes it 72 seats to both sides:

Cheeseman retains Corangamite for Labor
Updated 2 hours 10 minutes ago

ABC election analyst Antony Green has given the Victorian seat of Corangamite to Labor.

The sitting Labor member, Darren Cheeseman, is now ahead of the Liberal candidate, Sarah Henderson, by more than 900 votes.

The result sees Labor and the Coalition level-pegging on 72 seats each.

However, there is still one seat where the result is too close to call.

In the seat of Brisbane, Liberal Teresa Gambaro is ahead by almost 700 votes.
....

....If the seat of Brisbane falls to the Liberals that would put the Coalition on 73 seats to Labor's 72.

But Greens MP Adam Bandt has indicated he would side with Labor. .....

Abbott raising spectre of new poll, says Brown
Updated 41 minutes ago

Greens leader Bob Brown says he believes Opposition Leader Tony Abbott may be trying to force Australia back to the polls.

The three incumbent independents who will decide who forms the next government - Rob Oakeshott, Tony Windsor and Bob Katter - have asked each party to submit their policies to Treasury for costing.

Mr Abbott has refused to meet this request until the source of a Treasury leak is found, prompting Mr Katter to suggest the Opposition Leader is trying to force another election.

Senator Brown says he agrees with Mr Katter that Mr Abbott's motives are suspicious.

"This is now becoming a show of rejection of the independents by Mr Abbott," he told ABC TV's Lateline.

I find myself agreeing with all your sentiments re Tony. And pushing for an election opens him up to attacks of 'serving himself before his country'. Either way I'd predict ALP in govt - with more indies if a second election is called.

@msolga,
Plus there's this, from this morning's Australian.
From this despicable person who has lost his place in the new senate ine-up, later in the year. (Always knew he was a Liberal stooge.)

I think there's no way known we're going to get the chance to know about the real costing of the Liberal's election promises. The independents couldn't support them if we did ...

My hunch is that's there's a definite push underway from the conservatives to force a fresh election.

Gotta go now. Back after work, later in the day.....:

Steve Fielding may block Labor rule

THE Senate is emerging as a new threat to a stable minority government.

Steve Fielding is threatening to put a Labor government in gridlock next year and Nick Xenophon is vowing to force a new national crackdown on poker machines.

Victorian Senator Fielding, who can hold the Senate to ransom until July 1 next year by voting with the Coalition, has declared the "voters are not happy with Labor", and he has to decide whether to block everything it does. .... <cont>

@hingehead,
Morning, hinge.
I'm not certain I agree with your assessment.
I think more voters could well return to their respective "traditional party affiliations", following this deadlocked experience.
I think Abbott believes so, too. And thinks that there'd be fewer Greens & independent votes. Plus a lot less informal "protest"voting, too.

Back later on in the day.
Gotta run now ...

@msolga,
That's a possibility, but I believe the 'traditional party affiliations' doesn't cover enough people for it to make a difference. I'd say about 40% are swingers with no real affiliation.

I also think that Tony would suffer more than Julia in a re-election. Eorl's comments about Tony's inner battle are funny and ring very true. I think an extended election campaign (I think I read that there is no way we could go the polls this year) would see real Tony's ugly head.

Probably wishful thinking.

What a pity he didn't vow to stay awake until he was in the lodge.

I predict a big push from conservatives today: "A new election is the only way to go".
It's their best chance.
Watch the headlines.

Indeed.

@msolga,
Wow, I think even if it's their best chance it's a loser. New lib MPs might have very short careers (Not Wyatt Roy though). That 'right to power' view makes them do ugly things.

@hingehead,
I'm not sure, hinge.
I really wish I could agree with you.
It would really depend on what sort of campaign they (& Labor) run, next time around. (I'm certain they'd at least get their costings right next time! Wink )
Any new campaign would be very different to this last one, I'd think.

And as for that snake, Fielding!!!
Words fail me. Despicable!

@dlowan,
Yep, Deb.
Really.
In my opinion they can't meet the independents' requirements & could well lose out to Labor.

It's kind of weird given that Labor are pushing for the net filter.

What do the libs offer his section of politics?

@Eorl,
A suspicious man (or woman) might imagine that some conservatives have promised to distribute preferences to him if he causes a double dissolution election. Puts him back in the game.

@msolga,
Speaking of costings...\

If we do head into another election which party has the coffers to carry out a campaign? I would have thought the last six weeks would have drained both war chests.

Might be a lot of door knocking.
