That @JuliaGillard speech is a bit like our economy. Rest of the world impressed. But local media like kids in schoolyard, shouting 'fight'.

@msolga,
You know, I don't think it's particularly helpful to go on & on & on about Abbott's ( pretty obvious) misogyny & sexism.

More to the point (excluding his outraged response to Slipper's "sexism"! Wink ) I think, has been his relentless ongoing campaign, using whatever thuggish arguments, playing loose & reckless with the facts, to bring on an early election.

He has never accepted losing the 2010 election. And with the full support of Murdoch's "news" (?) outlets (say nothing of Alan Jones & all the rest of his crony supporters) he has conducted one of the the ugliest negative campaigns against a legitimate government ever seen in recent Australian political history.
But it hasn't worked. The Labor government is still there after two solid years of this. It will see out it's term.

So now, after all the ugliness, the nasty headlines, what exactly has Abbott achieved over the past two years?
Bugger all, in terms of his own ambitions.
But he has turned so many Australians off participating in politics.
He has destroyed the respect of so many Australians toward democratic processes through his ruthless campaign.

Even if the Liberals win the next election I feel pretty confident that Abbott will not be our next PM.
How could Australians feel remotely confident,or comfortable, about anyone who has shown themselves to be such an opportunistic thug leading the nation? Someone with so little respect?
I honestly can't see that happening.

@msolga,
If the US of A's circus of clowns is anything to go by, Abbott's "turning us away from politics" is part of a growing movement to disconnect average voters from the election process.

He won't turn this particular Australian off voting, but I might not be representative of the average ocker.

Petty's homage this morning ... to the ever-increasing, more-powerful-by-the minute, cross benchers.
Love it.
And what a mixed bunch!

I don't know how many of you outside of Victoria have followed the MLC (Methodist Ladies College, one of Melbourne's most "elite" private schools) very public bunfight about the sacking of the school's principal .... quite a spectacle, let me tell you!

But of far more interest to supporters of public education have been the revelations, published for the first time, of the huge amount of money the school has at its disposal. Wow. And Taxpayer funding, too!

Terrific & informative article, arguing for a saner & fairer approach to school funding, as the federal government further deliberates on its response to the Gonski Report.
Nothing to do with "the politics of envy", either! Wink :

@msolga,
That's a pretty interesting thought.... sort of supports Oakeshott's new paradigm. I wonder how many on both sides wish they could sit on the cross benches and make their own decisions and be above the petty squabbles?

@hingehead,
Quite a few, I'd imagine.
Like a number of "small l" Libs during the "gay marriage" debate, who would have loved to have crossed the floor & voted with their consciences instead of having to follow the party line.
And they (the cross benchers) have actively been be "courted" for their support, as you would have noticed recently.
(Like Thompson. He's been branded as "despicable" & god knows what else, but the Libs were apparently perfectly OK about accepting his vote. Same with Slipper.)

@msolga,
Did you see the libs business manager in explain away the invitation for Thompson's vote? 'It was just sent to a mailing list'. Right, a mailing list with 7 names on it and no-one noticed Thompson's. The libs really have done a belly flop on their approach to minority government.

Yes, I saw that.
(on Insiders?)
Craig Thompson on their mailing list. Such an easy thing to overlook! Laughing

Yep. It makes it rather hard to take them seriously when arguing the higher moral ground, doesn't it?
Slipper's vote is OK by them too. After all the carry-on.
Just Lib business as usual.

Did you notice that Cory Bernardi (gays & bestiality Rolling Eyes ) has been promoted after being demoted by Abbott?
That was quick!

@msolga,
Didn't see that - but don't really have a problem with it - temp chair is longstanding and the rules are followed (no frontbencher can hold it). On the other hand did you see the hamster wheel mention Cory's outburst about freedom of speech and giving the people a voice - then showing his youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/corybernardi?feature=results_main which has comments disabled.

I nearly blew my irony fuse.

QandA Ok last night. Mirabella was less annoying than usual. I laughed at her saying that Labour had orchestrated a targeted campaign claiming Tony was a misogynist/sexist. Well strike me pink! The Libs would never orchestrate a campaign associating a labour leader with perceived faults (quickly shreds 'Mad' Latham, 'Tickerless' Beazley, 'Lemonhead' Rudd and Juliar files).

Charlie Pickering was excellent. Must have loved being able to talk on a point for more than 5 seconds at a time (have you ever seen Ten's 'The Project'?)

Shorten did OK. But totally pwned Mirabella at the end over the single mother /dole changes - if you didn't see; Mirabella was waxing about raising children being the most important job in the world and what the govt was doing was a direct attack on those least able to deal with it. Shorten said a couple of times 'You voted for it Sophie...' and then said something that I didn't realise '...while you were in government'. Apparently the changes were brought in under Howard in 2006.

@hingehead,
Not one of the better Q&A's though ....

I got a wee bit tired of the endless discussion about what the term "misogyny" actually means. The technical definitions. I think most people knew perfectly well what Julia Gillard was saying to Tony Abbot in that speech.

And I also became rather tired of Pamela's little anecdotes ... re Billy, especially. I wish she had addressed the questions from the audience a bit more. Not quite sure what she had to contribute, overall.

Absolutely agree.
Succinct, on the ball & very intelligent responses.
(I must confess I've never heard of him before last night, but I was very impressed with him. If only our politicians could be so clear!)

Yep!

But not exactly fair, or right, whichever government was/is responsible.

Did you see Media Watch, a bit earlier?
I loved how Holmes pointed out that the Canberra media gallery's response was so totally out of kilter with the very strong popular - ordinary people's - response to Gillard's speech in the parliament.

How have they become so out of touch? (say nothing of irrelevant, quite a bit of the time?)
