.. & the latest election date prediction from the AGE:

Quote:
.... she is expected to fly to Canberra early this morning to visit Governor-General Quentin Bryce, for an election probably on August 21.

August 28 is still a possibility, but sources have consistently discounted the likelihood of a campaign of more than five weeks.

@msolga,
You may scoff, but this is our big Oz political story of the day! Very Happy

I've been reading the online news for almost a couple of hours now this (Saturday ) morning & trust me, this is just about the only political story going from Oz.

Next, I expect to hear that the chauffeur-driven car has arrived to collect her from the airport! Laughing

I'm really sorry, but I must stop this riveting blow-by-blow account as I must go out now. Wink :

Excellent reporting, Msolga, and others. I am marking my calendar for mid to late August.
The last line of the ABC report confused me:
"Although Ms Gillard is calling the election today, it is believed the writs will not be issued until Wednesday, allowing more time for young people to enrol(l) to vote."

@realjohnboy,
After the opening blows, Ms Gillard seems to have had a disappointing start. "Moving Forward". Really? My pet hate phrase? The TV bobbing heads are suggesting the slogan won't survive the night.

I guess that means that the status of today's announcement is an informal one (clumsy way of putting it, I know) & the election date won't be "official" until the writs have been formally issued on Wednesday, RJB.
Julia Gillard (as PM) is required to inform the governor general (Quentin Bryce) of her decision (that's how it's done in Oz) & apparently Ms Bryce had plans to leave the country around midday today. (which caused much of the speculation about the announcement being either yesterday or today.)
So now the eligible young first-time voters will have a few days up their sleeves to enrol so they can vote. (That's what the GetUp spoof election trailer I posted earlier was about. Encouraging these young voters to enrol.)

Here's a bit of political trivia for you. (I'm just fascinated by these things! Wink )

Oz governor general, Quentin Bryce, whom Julia Gillard was required to meet with this morning, is the mother-in-law of federal Labor parliamentarian, Bill Shorten, who played no small part in Julia becoming Labor leader :

Quote:
On 25 June 2010, Shorten was one of the main factional leaders involved in the replacement of Kevin Rudd as leader of the Labor Party and Prime Minister for Julia Gillard.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Shorten.

So I guess you could say that Julia has now received two very different kinds of blessings from 2 prominent members of one very influential family!
Small world, hey?

@msolga,
Just a couple of comments before I leave this thread:

First, I'm really surprised that the was no new climate change policy announcement prior to the announcement of the election date. I understood that that was the plan, to fix all the problematic policy areas prior to the election campaign. Now Labor will have to announce any policy changes during the campaign. As well as that, Labor will have to sort out the (many) remaining glitches in their new asylum seekers policy during the campaign, too. Like finalizing the actual location of the processing centre.

Secondly, after listening to Barrie Cassidy: Amazing. Not all that long ago we believed that this election would be fought between Kevin Rudd & Malcolm Turnbull, as leaders of their respective parties! Incredible how much has changed in such a short time in both parties. Are the days of long-term party leaders now history?

Just one more thing. (I promise! Wink )

I miss jeeprs. I think he might have gone. Sad
I've really enjoyed chewing the fat (at length!) with jeeprs, on a day-by-day, blow-by-blow basis. It has been extremely rare, on the Oz political threads over the years, to come a cross another such similarly obsessed/afflicted poster.
So if you're reading this by any chance, jeeprs, I'd really welcome your return.
Only if you want to, of course! Smile
