No one really knew but it was supposed to be the fore skin of Jesus. Of course this would mean a tradition (or very wierd parents) of keeping the forskin and that didnt happen.

Well, there was enough genuine pieces of the true cross to make several arks. And one town did massacre another one over competition produced by having the same relic....of course tourism and donations had nothing to do with these mass murders, it was purely a religious matter.
