What's the stupidest thing you've done recently?

My sister was born in Alaska when it was a territory... that's always good for a laugh. (Was that the stupidest thing my mom ever did? nah)

You there with the colds. Please try taking those Cold-Eze things. They look like cough drops but have zinc in 'em. Honest, they'll save you ('course you are supposed to start them at the first sign of a cold.)

Did I do anything stupid yesterday? Hmmm, went shopping for Christmas presents. It took hours but I only brought home one gift plus two velvet shirts for myself. <hanging head in shame> Suddenly I am feeling desperate. I think I've read too many "I hate Christmas" rags on a2k and nothing seems right as a present anymore.

I've been doing the zinc tabs, piff. I think they're what have prevented my last couple of colds from turning into months of illness.

Oh, good. They helped Mr.P to get over his old bad self last week. "Feeling puny" that's what we used to call it. Good health is a blessing, that's for sure.

That's good. That's very good.*

I'm going to have done something very stupid if I don't go stand in line at the P.O. -- They have a pickup at 11. Mr. P. did a pile of Christmas cards last night, the sweetie, and it's my job to send 'em off.

*Good luck for the rest of your day. Shocked Cool

PrincessAsh, I was also born when there were just 48 states. I would have retaliated by getting out all the nekkid baby pics. LOL

Still feeling too icky to do anything really stupid, but now that I know about Cold-Eze, I'll try to be smarter next time when I get a cold.

Well, today I got pissed at how slow the people were driving on the freeway, clogging up lanes 1-3, so I used the commuter lane.

Pretty stupid, but I didn't get caught, it was raining and the cops hate to give out tickets in the rain.

Oh, Diane, trust me, she always has. . . she submitted a naked "let's play dress up in a lovely boa and sunglasses and nothing else and show our butt to the camera" pic as my senior year baby picture. . .

they all knew it was me anyway. . .

Multiple choice thickheadedness.

I am trying to teach myself to play chess on my Palm Pilot. I am not a good chess player because I do not actually look at the whole board, I know this, I know this because I was told this when I was nine and a neighbor tried to teach me --- Now the horsey can move like this -- and one of the things he told me was that I didn't take enough time to look at the whole board. I also know this because one of my wives (don't ask) also tried to teach me --Ah hah, I see your gambit-- (don't ask). She also said that I didn't take enough time to see the whole board, but she would also pout if I forced her to trade queens so, whatever.

ANYway, I've been trying to play on the subway. I've been concentrating, looking at the board, looking at each piece's potential and then looking up to see what stop the train had reached. Okay? Okay.

In the morning, I like to take the C from 125th Street because it makes all
the stops and at 23rd Street I just hop up the stairs and head to work. From 59th Street the stops are 50th, then 42nd, then 34th and then 23rd.
So yesterday, I am playing at level three and getting my butt kicked, so I demote myself to level two and bear down as the train arrives at 59th Street. I look up, good, four stops to go.

I look at the board, I have a nice defensive line of pawns strung out on the right side. My queen lurks, aided by the King's knight on the left. There are a number of things I can do, hmmmm, this bishop could threaten that knight and pin the Palm's King Rook at the same time.
I concentrate. I ponder. I try to see another move ahead.

I look up.

The train is about to pull out of West 4th.

That's right. West 4th is not one of the four stops as listed above.
But there's more. I crash through the train's closing doors and before really thinking about it (try to see the whole board!! ) dash up the stairs and out onto the street to catch a cab.

It is pouring rain. Really pouring. Huge buckets of water are falling from the sky. There's an ocean liner making a left off of West 4th and making a terrific wake that someone could use to take a surfboard to work. I don't have a surfboard, I have a chessboard on my Palm.

Cabs are a rarity at West 4th at 7:30 am, I've learned, and in a rainstorm, nonexistent. I did wait till I was soaked to the skin, waving my arm like some rockstar's fan, in hopes of catching one. I didn't see a cab. Not even a occupied one.

So I went back down into the subway, caught the uptown E, exited at 23rd Street and gave myself an even more through soaking by jogging, dodging, trapsing briskly the six crosstown blocks to work. (Never saw a 23 bus either.)

Now the question is: What was the most stupid part of all this?
A) Missing my stop.
B) Attempting the impossible of catching a taxi in a rainstorm.
C) Moving my pawn to Rook 5, exposing my knight to danger but further protecting a bishop.
D) Trying to teach a mind like mine chess at all
E) Being so unawares of my surroundings
in a place and time called New York City.

Joe

Ah it happens, Joe; it isn't stupidity, it's being absorbed into something. For the joy of multiple choice questions, I would say E.

West 4 is quite far away, isn't it? Past Hunter College? I could never cope; I get around London fine, but the Tube has names, not numbers.

At least you didn't end up like my uncle Pádraig, who, when going from Manchester to Birmingham, ended up in Dover. Whoops!

West 4th is the NYU stop on the ACE. . . so I'm quite familiar with it. . . the subway in New York, at least down to west 4 is cool because the entire city's a grid, dròm. . . much easier than trying to remember a bunch of names :-)

But any way you slice it, winding up on 4th when you're supposed to be on 23rd is a royal pain :-)

I tried to teach myself chess years ago by following the Fisher Spasky (sp?) tournament, as did the rest of our lab.
I never could figure more than two moves ahead when playing. Wrong mind, please return it.

Joe, I vote for B. Are you crazy?
PrincessAsh, I'm sure they were darling and that they still look like you.
Today, my stupid thing was spending time on eBay. It is addictive and costly. I'm into PayPal big time.
