I suppose it depends on how you define "winning". I think of the effort to war with these things as having a goal of reducing the amount of these things, and as such, I think it is possible to "win" or to be "winning", but that doesn't mean our current methods are "winning" these wars. I am convinced that the liberal thinking which gave birth to most of what we currently call the war on poverty actually creates more poverty, not less. Likewise I think that the conservative thinking behind our war on drugs actually does more harm to society than does the use of drugs.
As to the war on terrorism, the only thing I am sure of is that we either take the war to them--as the current administration and its allies are trying to do--or they will bring the war to us. We do not have the luxury of simply choosing not to fight this war.
