OK Freedom is important - liberty, equality, fraternity - but does it trump everything else?

As soon as you have any sort of authority or system of laws (criminal or civil) then freedom is necessarily going to be restricted.

Although this is often seen as a left versus right issue, it seems to me that both left and right wingers are keen on freedom when their side is in opposition, and not so keen when their side is in power. That said, both left and right have libertarian and authoritarian wings.
