He is wealthy enough to be insulated from financial problems as are his partners and masters......the fact that it will effect Americans negatively is of no concern to him....

The EU would be stupid not to react to US economic dirty plays.

In the future we will see more nations willing to stand up to us and our economic stranglehold will start to loosen.

I am willing to live with the results.

I am curious to know how much of an election issue will this be.

It seems that if US businesses feel the pinch, it can't be good for Bush reelection plans. There is only so much spin you can put on something that effects the economy.

I don't know and it will be interesting to see. But, I won't be surprised if Bush finds a discrete way to back down.

Bush backed down on this a long time ago by giving out exemptions all over the place.

This is just payback.

What kind of economic stranglehold does the US have on steel production?

None, the US has a stranglehold on the world's economy that allows it to play dirty games in any area, such as steel production.

The US steel industry is lame, the US economic dominance allows the US to prop up this lame dying industry through dirty tricks.

That's what I thought. I also thought that most of us buy clothes, pens, & other consumer goods from China, so these sanctions seem off-base. The United States consumes about 25% of the world trade. Isn't it about the same for the E.U.?

Well, they thought the steel sanctions were off-base, since we started the game they won the ruling.

The E.U. thought it was off-base because the best steel is from Japan and Korea? I suppose every country wants to be (maybe even needs to be) especially good at something.

I guess it would make more sense to me if the sanctions were on really good American products of which I can't think of any, but there are surely some. (Or can we be THAT mediocre?)

The Exporting of America-Lou Dobbs
This has been a great series, outlining why the American workers are expendible to the Multi-Corps and how the Govt. both Dems & Repubs along with the Congress has sold out the American Middle Class. Globalization does not help most people of the world, except the wealthy Capitalists.

No, the EU thought it was off base because it was illegal. The EU thought it was off base because the US pushed to make it illegal.

The US was starting a trade war, it was not the battle the US chose but the fact that the war was started.

Nations that were not affected cried foul. Not because of personal interest but because someone was breaking the rules.

When this all started the retaliations were going to be very political, e.g. orange juice (Florida had just won the election for Bush) and other symbolic items.
