Poll: 31% say America needs 3rd party
Posted: Wednesday, May 12, 2010 1:00 PM by Mark Murray
Filed Under: Democrats, Republicans, Polls

From NBC's Mark Murray
Here's the first set of numbers we're releasing from our new NBC/WSJ poll, which comes out in full beginning at 6:30 pm ET:

According to the poll, more than 80% see problems with America's two-party system -- with 31% believing it's seriously broken and that America needs a third party, and with another 52% saying that it has real problems but that it can still work with some improvements.

Only 15% of Americans believe the two-party system works fairly well.

The poll was taken May 6-10, and these numbers have a margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points.

Liberals would not be able to join with conservatives in a third party. There would need to be four parties, making the new parties about 15% in strength. Not much different than Nader's impact.

@edgarblythe,
You miss the point Edgar.

Any worthwhile third party would be conservative. Who would want a liberal third party (that would just hurt the Democrats)?

I would join a liberal third party, if I thought it could succeed.

If it would succeed, it would be the death of the Democratic party. In that case it wouldn't be a third party any more.

((Somehow I don't think it would make you any happier)).

@edgarblythe,
I don't think one should join a party just because it may succeed. You would join a party because that party believes in the same things that you do.

I think America needs a 10th party (or more). We need more choices so we're not stuck pigeon holing everyone into one of two parties (neither of which they fit accurately).

@edgarblythe,
Well, the conservatives who don't think the Republican party represents them would be a good place to start with a new party.

Hard right/right/the rest of the U.S.

Makes some kind of sense.

@ehBeth,
Even if it only splintered off 10 - 15% from the Republican vote, it could work.

There are liberals questioning whether the Democrats speak for them anymore. Me, for one.

@edgarblythe,
Two ways to go - change the party, or change parties.

69% say No 3rd Party.

No third party is needed, but a return to core values by a given party would be advantageous.

Two parties a week is more than enough. That means Friday and Saturday night, with Sunday to recover. Where will you put this third party ? Wont it just take people away from the other two parties ? There are already enough non-party goers, this may confuse things more...Party on, dudes !!! Righteous !

If we adopted (we will never) a parliamentary system, I could see us supporting a n-th party, but as is, it will be just two parties. If a new party rises, one falls.
