First go to a sporting goods store and buy a cap that looks just like this:

Then be sure to wear it everywhere you go, ESPECIALLY a Yankees game.

I'll support you Cyclo if you are so brave to wear the Red and Blue!

I'll buy you a cheap dinner if you like....

If I wear the cap, or in general?

I would love to have lunch with any east coast A2K'ers, I've never really met any of you.

@Cycloptichorn,
Either way you get lunch or dinner. You might get some food poisoning if you choose to wear a Yankees cap! Wink

I agree that Cental Park is a place to go. Check to see if there's a free concert in the park when you're there. The free concerts are wonderful--not just for the music but for the atmosphere and the surrounding Noo Yawkers. Picnicing in the park with thousands of others. One of my favorite things, when I did stuff like that.

Yes, the old part of the city (downtown) is worth a wander. China Town, Little Italy. Even the courts district. You'll see all the building in Law and Order.

Seeing the Statue of Liberty in person is not the same as seeing it on film. Being on a boat and seeing it in the harbor was moving (for me). Pondering what it must have meant to hundreds of thousands of immigrants.

@Roberta,
I'm biased towards the MET and other museums. By the time you get here Cyclo, I should also have a MOMA membership if you're willing to go museum hopping.

@Cycloptichorn,
When I used to go to italy, schniff, I researched wildly. This was all fairly long ago. What that was good for was that I recognized names of places I might like. But what worked was when I or we were hungry, and looked at posted menus and just made a stab at it. I never went to most of those places on my list. Re NY, I'd say l look at yelp (however good or bad) and other sites, just as a background clue.

I guess as a general clue, avoid dining in tourist areas, though I suppose that doesn't always hold.

@tsarstepan,
Paola of a2k met me at the Met and showed up each day to let me in, and also, Diane.

So I'll speak up for Tsar and Cyclo going through the Met. What a burst of argumentation!! To be a fly on the wall...

Okay, here's the real question: where are the dive bars I should hit? I know we're going to want to go out several nights, but I ain't paying no ******* 15 dollars for a mixed drink.

Depends where you are, but there are TONS of dive bars you should try.

Just a few...Hogs 'n' Heifers (famous, somewhat touristy biker bar; go around midnight-it's ******* insane), Mars Bar (this is the diviest of the dives, and it's about as big as a tin of Altoids inside), Double Down Saloon (sadomasochistic porn on the TV monitors around the bar and nothing but punk on the jukebox), American Trash (Good divey atmosphere, classic metal on the jukebox)...also, one of my favorites is Rudy's. $3 PBRs. You won't find a cheaper bar in Manhattan, and the place has a lot of character. And they give out free hot dogs. It's a cool place.

Here, look at this picture of Mars Bar. The place is a ******* dump. It's awesome!

I've only been once and loved the city and the people. Seriously, friendly people... I know, I couldn't believe it either, after all the nasty rumours to the contrary. Anywho, I loved the museums and the park, all the walking...etc, but I did go on a very interesting tour, the Tenement museum. It's not one building but an area and the history was fascinating.

Tickets purchased last night. We'z coming!

Start spreading the news, I’m leaving today
I want to be a part of it - new york, new york
These vagabond shoes, are longing to stray
Right through the very heart of it - new york,
new york

I wanna wake up in a city, that doesn’t sleep
And find I’m king of the hill - top of the heap

These little town blues, are melting away
I’ll make a brand new start of it - in old new
york
If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere
It’s up to you - new york, new york

New york, new york
I want to wake up in a city, that never sleeps
And find I’m a number one top of the list, king
of the hill
A number one

These little town blues, are melting away
I’m gonna make a brand new start of it - in old
new york
And if I can make it there, I’m gonna make it
anywhere

It's up to you - new york new york

Our trip to NY is coming up next week, and I realized that I had shamefully forgotten to update the thread!

We'll be there from Aug. 4-10th; I'd love to take some of you for a drink, or a coffee, or whatever it is NY'ers do for fun..,.
