There is a pan-Asian restaurant in Waltham, MA called Tom Can Cook which has a wonderful tofu dish on the menu. When I worked at a gift shop there, the owner and I would split an order of breaded and fried tofu and an order of Vietnamese fresh spring rolls. Wonderful!

I admit that I sometimes crave tofu and Swiss chard and sweet potatoes although I never eat them at the same meal.

A friend invited me to a vegetarian Thanksgiving last year--I went with some trepidation. They had two different kinds of faux turkey--one was tofurkey and the other, if I remember correctly was some kind of fungus, which sounds vaguely disgusting, as well as improbable. But they were both actually pretty good (the fungus was a bit better)--I was surprised.

@MontereyJack,
Eh. I had a thread about that once, since I invited vegetarians to my abode. I made it about italian food that had some relation to the usual foods for americans. No link, since that was on abuzz.

High praise from me. Discuss tofu (even its name sounds gross), sorta like UrANUS

I'm glad you had a good tofu experience, farmer. (And about time, too! Smile )

I often wonder if the bad tofu/bean curd experiences I constantly read about here (particularly from US folk) are to do with crappily or uninterestingly prepared tofu?

I have eaten a lot of not so exciting, so/so Mexican food in my time, but then, it probably wasn't cooked by people who knew all that much about Mexican cooking.

Let me go on the record as saying I LOVE TOFU! (I really do! Very Happy )

But it's probably because Oz is so close to Asia & we have so many Asians in the Oz community. They have taught us how to cook it in very simple & delicious ways. Apart from that, 20 years as a vegetarian meant that I had to learn tasty ways of cooking the stuff!

However, due to the sad lack of inspired Mexican/Australian cooks here, I feel I am never going to get to eat the Mexican food you US folk rave about.

@dadpad,
For tofu, dp?

Nah.

Fresh garlic, ginger & chillies.

Plus, soy sauce, or Hoisin sauce, or oyster sauce, or .... (endless possible list)

And very nice with various varieties of Asian greens!

@oolongteasup,
Oh, any number of fresh, crunchy vegetables! Very Happy

Or in soups.

Or baked till crispy, after a quick marinade .. with lots of ginger & garlic & chilli flakes.

@farmerman,
Ive gotta say that the "not too bad" tofu I had was made by this Korean immigrant guy. The 'fu actually looked like beef chunks. (The mealy texture is still a bit un appetizing to me). BUT the use of the jalapenos and the nice garlicky sauce was good. I coulda made a sammich outta the jalapenos and the gravy, just leave out the tofu.

Good evening, farmer. (I'm cooking dinner right now. No, not tofu tonight.)
No, it isn't an oxymoron. But mind you, there's tofu & tofu.
I don't buy the stuff in the supermarket anymore. I discovered that this little Vietnamese supermarket in Footscray a few years ago (called "Little Saigon" - it's just like being in Vietnam!) makes it fresh daily. It's FANTASTIC stuff, let me tell you! And heaps cheaper than the supermarket, too. But the main thing is the taste & the texture. Wonderful. So I tend to save my tofu/bean curd dinner experiments for when I have the time to make the trip there. I can also pick up all these weird & wonderful Vietnamese greens at the same time. Two birds with one stone. Perfect arrangement! Very Happy

@ossobuco,
Not breading like Americans do it but that sort of batter the Chinese make out of beaten eggs and cornstarch. This restaurant manages to fry things well . . . fresh oil and no heavy grease.
