It is actually illegal to tape a conversation in Oz without first telling the person it is being recorded. I wonder how and if that applies to this ? Does Britain have similar laws ?

Excessive, both in quality and quantity, apologies are worse than none at all. He should certainly have only (if at all) apologised for any hurt his personal opinion may have caused her personally, and the medium by which the hurt is conveyed is enough to apologise with. Now he looks nasty, weak and hypocritical.
