Need water softener recommendation

The motherboard on our Sears water softener went after only 3 years. Have received some info on Puronics and EcoWater systems but the reviews I'm reading on sales and office personnel don't sound good. Are these units really better than purchasing a softener from Sears or Lowes? I like that I'm eliminating salt, but are the filter costs higher?
