@vonny,
re the photographer, Michael Kenna (a favorite of mine long since) -
Michael Kenna is a pioneer in the landscape photography genre and after searching through his work online, it is very easy to see why. Controlling shutter speed, Kenna is able to get a look that is evident in all of his work. Moody, intense scenes are what his work is all about.
This one specific picture caught my attention out of the dozens of pictures he has up. Although not the most interesting of his sets, it is one that i really like. I like it because i know taking a picture like this is a lot harder than it looks. exposing for your foreground like the boat would automatically blow out your background of the mountains in the fog and exposing for the mountains in the back would probably give you a boat that was a black blob in the middle ground.
Considering that this is film, knowing your settings is vital even with a light meter.
He also uses a longer exposure to get the smoothness of the water which gives an almost mirror reflection of the mountainous peaks in the background. I also love the details of the rocks in the foreground through the shallow water near the shore; an extra small touch that gives a more in depth realistic view for the scene. All in all i think this is an amazing image that shows the expertise that Kenna was able to use when shooting all his photographs.
