It might not really fit here.
Just want to tell you that the Little Mermaid has her birthday today and she is 100 years old

The Little Mermaid (Danish: Den lille havfrue) is a bronze statue depicting a mermaid, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Based on the fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen, the small and unimposing statue is a Copenhagen icon and has been a major tourist attraction since 1913. It has become a popular target for defacement by vandals and political activists.

@saab,
Not only defacement, but the head has been replaced several times.

When I was in Copenhagen in 1990, and took a picture of the little mermaid, I remember there used to be some SHELL oil tanks across from the water.

Had an opportunity to spend a few days in Copenhagen before a Scandinavian tour of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. Took a train from Copenhagen into Paris after the tour, and it was also the first time I visited Brugges because I met a man on the train going north, and I asked him where I should visit while in the area. He recommended Brugges, so I went. I still remember my visit there, and hope to return some day.

@cicerone imposter,
You are so right that there probably were oil tanks. TheLittle Mermaid is sitting in the harbour of Copenhagen.
Someone sawed off her arm in 1984
She lost her head in 1964 and 1998. Many girls have lost their heads more often than that in less than 100 years

I can even connect your trip to Brügge with the LittleMermaid.
H.CAndersen, who wrote the story, was baptized in Odense Cathedral.
In 1086 King Knud the holy was murdered in front of the altar in this cathedral.
His wife and son Karl fled to Flandern where he later became duke of Flandern.
In 1127 Karl was murdered in front of the altar in a chapel in Brügge castle.

@cicerone imposter,
With the Little Mermaid and the tourists your picture would just have been another Wonderful Copenhagen.
With the tanker in the background you caught the romantic with reality.
I like the idea.

@vonny,
It's there that Conan Doyle found the inspiration for his novel "The lost world".

Five percent of the mount belongs to Brazil and a few more percent to Guyana.

@timur,
Thanks for the information - I didn't know about the Conan Doyle connection. I'll google it and try to find out more. Not surprised - it is pretty spectacular!
