$100,000 left stashed inside Salvation Army store suitcases
MEGAN LEVY
April 6, 2010
Police have charged a couple with "theft by finding" after they forked out a few dollars for a second-hand suitcase at a Melbourne Salvation Army Store that had up to $100,000 hidden in its lining.

The suitcase was donated to the Salvos in Beaconsfield by a woman who did not know her husband had hidden the cash in the bag's lining.
He said his family had cleaned out a room and donated some goods. One of the items was a suitcase with a very significant amount of money in it," Major Halse said.
A review of records showed the suitcase had been sold to a person using an EFTPOS card.

But privacy laws prevented the bank from passing on the purchaser's contact details, Major Halse said.

Late this afternoon, Victoria Police revealed they had charged a man, 44, and a woman, 34 and that they had recovered most of the money, which had been put in different bank accounts.

I was expecting a story about going to some function . . . like the ones where they try to sell you time shares (do they still do that, post mortgage crisis?) . . .
yep, they still do it on the cape -- in the dennis/harwich area.
we actually stopped going to our fave b'fast spot so as to avoid a time-share guy, who would stand in the parking lot stalking his victims...

the steak is under wraps in the downstairs freezer.
it's fate as yet undecided...

"Theft by finding" ???

Around here, it's called "finders keepers". If I am trotting through the woods in Ft. Tryon Park and find a bundle of twenties, I am NOT going to post a notice at the local Laundromat announcing the find.

I thought about the couple finding the money in the donated suitcase. The money is theirs. They are under no obligation to contact anyone about the find. Suppose they bought a framed farm scene for 10 cents and then found out that there was an original Picasso hidden between two pieces of cardboard by the former (eccentric) owner? They are supposed to call who? The Salvation Army?
I would say that in both cases it's on the onus of the Salvation Army (whom I love dearly and have supported for 40 years) to check all of their donated goods for any hidden treasure, not the unsuspecting purchasers.

Then again I am really grumpy today.

PS: Skirt steak---marinate, lightly grill, slice very thin--serve with some good guacamole and salsa, sour cream and jalapeƱos, Coronas!!! (Going to cost you more then the steak was worth to buy the fixing to make it.)

I got a grocery bagging prize two weeks ago.. a box of kleenex tissues, somewhat crushed and already opened.. and an insulated coffee mug.

Tradeja. Wouldja like a steak to hold up the metal doohickey?

The steak's in the freezer. No one knows if it's any good, and we're scared to find out. We could toss it out back but I figure the hawks don't eat anything dead, the skunks and squirrels are vegetarians and the local feral cats are finicky (plus we're trying to discourage them from using our detached garage as a shelter/disco/pick up jernt). This leaves rats, pigeons and neighborhood dogs.

Mongo has been sworn to secrecy.

If he could only remember what that was.

@jespah,
Couldn't you SMELL if it was any good?

If'n youse too skeert to use it, it's just cluttering the freezer and it might as well meet its maker now, instead of in 6 months.
