Is there anybody left in Poland? I'm thinking a few of Obama's soft spoken changes in the tougher status quo in the region has emboldened the KGB...I mean, Russia. What do you think? Was this an accident?

@Lash,
The crash devastated the upper echelons of Poland's political and military establishments. On board were the army chief of staff, the navy chief commander, and heads of the air and land forces. Also killed were the national bank president, deputy foreign minister, army chaplain, head of the National Security Office, deputy parliament speaker, Olympic Committee head, civil rights commissioner and at least two presidential aides and three lawmakers, the Polish foreign ministry said.

@Lash,
Like many alleged crimes purportedly committed by this generation of Russian government, if the Putin had a hand in this plane crash, we are not ever going to find out the truth. They're too good at covering their tracks.

From the Economist:

Quote:
A growing pile of flowers outside the presidential palace in Warsaw attested to the public's stunning sense of loss. Radek Sikorski, the foreign minister, who broke the news to the prime minister Donald Tusk this morning and said that the head of government wept on hearing it. Both men had been at Katyn earlier in the week, at a ceremony attended by the Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin.

A very sad day for the Polish people.

@Lash,
If Russia/State Dept can control the weather, then there's something much more exciting going on than the decimation of the Polish government.

@tsarstepan,
I don't know if you noticed, but the investigation is now under the personal control of, ahem, Putin. To show how important it is, of course. To my mind, there are two questions:

1) Would Russia do this?

2) Did Russia do this?

Actually, #1 is not much of a question.

@roger,
Sounds like an accident. Photos from the scene show dense fog and the pilot tried to land that plane 4 times.

@Irishk,
It sounds like an accident, but what with all the poisoning of Ukranian presidents and sending troops into Georgia,...when you're at odds with Poland and the government disappears one day, you sort of cast a wary eye toward Russia....

On the other hand,
this may be one element in a plot by Tsar Stepan
to re-gain his throne.

This is an obvious and terrible case of assassination. The Poles were getting somewhere and trying to remain independent.
What happens to countries who defend their sovereignty?
they're killed. or shut down. or taken over. or terrorists. or anything else

The Polish president was a stupid man. Why did he have all the important people in one plane and also in a rickety Soviet era plane? Why was the Polish Air Marshal in the doorway of the pilot's cabin?

@talk72000,
the president probably isn't the one who plans the logistics of their transportation. and in a supposed conspiracy and assassination (as were discussing), what the president wants probably is irrelevant.
