We have a trusty, sweet, lovable, loyal canine who would probably lick an intruder to death.

About 3 months ago I accidentally hit the 'police' button instead of the 'stay' button while setting our alarm (half-asleep) ... the police were at the door within about 3 minutes...our dog slept through the entire thing (the 'police' button produces a gawd-awful racket LOL).

What if the intruder hurt/killed you during those 3 minutes?

He'd be caught then, but not before you you dead or something.

Re the 9mm, if I had to shoot someone who came in my house,
I frankly wouldn't care if I killed him or just harmed him,
as long as I kept him away from me.
That 's the point;
so lite a round as 9mm is more comfortable to shoot, but offers u less opportunity to control the emergency.
In most cases, the mere SIGHT of a defensive gun
moves the bad guy to leave as fast as he possibly can,
but not always. Historically, sometimes thay have kept coming,
against civilian defenders, against police and against soldiers.

A defender 's survival may depend on his or her ability to CONTROL the emergency as well as possible.

I agree chai2...I think the only point of contention is that a .45 is more likely to keep him/her away from you.

I don't know though; I've seen studies that a 9mm is just as effective in human flesh as a .45.
I know in balastic gel the .45 is a lot more effective, but our bodies are a lot softer than balastic gel.

It depends on the momentum and intensity of motivation of the aggressor,
factors that r not foreseeable when u make your choice of defensive gun.
See my mention of defensive druggist with his 9mm set forth above.

U need to be able to maximize "energy dump" into the target.

I like the bamboo stakes that get driven into the body en mass when the crook trips the wire, as happened in Vietnam. The burgler steps in through a window, steps on the trigger - - - Mr. Green

Yeah, that reminds me of Charles Bronson's Death Wish movies.

shotgun barrels are easily changed with a half turn screw fit. I have several barrels, the home protection version is barely above the pump slide. Thatd be about 12 ".

If I ever use that gun for targets, I screw in a new barrel.

The National Firearms Act of 1934 requires an 18" barrel.
Federal crime. Overall length minimum: 26 inches.

@farmerman,
David is absolutely. Any perceived advantage to a 12" barrel just isn't worth the potential cost. By any chance, do you happen to own an acetlylene torch? If so, I strongly urge you to use it.

@roger,
I have several spare shotgun barrels for the Ithaca. Making a 'sawed off" took a
1VISE

2 AIR HACKSAW

3RULER

4 SANDPAPER DISCS

WALLA, It mqay be not worth it , but it looks damn evil. I was considering carving the stock into a hand grip but that would be doing something that could not be undone easily.

26" overall minimum length.

I hope the BAT does not read these boards.

@OmSigDAVID,
Ill quickly go and screw in the 30" barrel. That BAT crap is stupid. A shotgun barrel on a pump is so easily exchanged .

I will invite BAT guys in for tea and show them the 12" barrel. WOuld they arrest me for having a metal pipe?

BELIEVE IT! U r lucky if thay don 't arrest for THINKING about it.
Thay have arrested people for having the equipment to possibly
maybe violate the law in the future.

@farmerman,
Well yes, it is stupid. Like, a pump action with a 12" barrel suddenly becomes concealable, or something? Still, I do not think the "piece of pipe" argument will carry much weight.

Are you accusing me of being stupid because I own a sawed off which quickly converts to a reg length barrel and because I use it in the house for protection so I dont kill myself with a ricochet? You mesquite smokin NewMejican.

I'm pretty sure you knew what I meant was stupid, but just in case. . . .

@farmerman,
for the record, it was a law enforcement officer that helped me modify my first shotgun. (off the record, of course)

there is a lot of grey in the home defense arena.
