@dlowan,
I don't know where you are from? Florida's must experience to me is the springs. They are all over the place. It's like diving into crystal water. Many are online and that is a great thing to experience.
I lived in FL for 16 years on the east coast and would live there again.

Protect yourself

Minimise the risk of identity theft

* NEVER send money or give personal details to people you don’t know and trust.
* Always get independent advice if you are unsure whether an offer or request is genuine.
* Shred all documents containing personal information, such as credit card applications and bank statements.
* Regularly check your credit card and/or bank statements to ensure that suspicious transactions are detected.

Fake prizes

* Be suspicious of any unexpected prizes received via unsolicited letters, emails or telemarketing.
* If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
* Do your homework. Search the company’s name on the internet, you may find some useful information.
* Ask yourself: if I have won so much money why don't they take the money from my winnings?
* Tell your family and friends about this scam, especially if English is not their first language.

Report

Exactly. I started reading him as a teenager and he really got me fired up about environmental stuff.

Them Florida boys had been scammin' since forever . . . back in the 50s, you'd see this joker in a straw hat on the teevee, wavin' his arm in a "come here" gesture, and sayin' "Come on down!" It was so common, that "come on down!" became a joke with comedians.

*******************************************

The natural springs are great. I mentioned the Wakiva River near Orlando earlier. It was even creepy sometimes, the water was so clear that you got this dislocating sense that your canoe was hovering three feet in the air over a bed of white sand. That was a hot day in late summer, and my friend and i took turns diving in the water (one guy stayed in the canoe to keep an eye out for alligators)--the water was about 50 degrees, and that's wonderful on a hot day.

@dlowan,
Yeah right-- and I MAY have won 10 million dollars!

Do NOT fall for those vacations: if it sounds too good to be true, it IS.
(Not probably-- DEFINITELY).

If they ask you for a PENNY, it's a scam; if you really "won" something, then it would be 100% free, otherwise they'd just give you a smaller prize.

For example, if they say "you only need to pay $80," then say "ok, just fly me halfway there, that ought to cover it." If you really won something, they'd accept it.

So if they're trying to make money, then it IS a scam-- and you didn't "win" ANYTHING, they're just a travel-agent service who called you up at RANDOM-- i.e. a SALES CALL.

If you want to dream, you can do that for free.

@realjohnboy,
It's probably not a "scam," but a discount travel-package during low-volume seasons, when tourist-towns naturally lower their rates. They'll offer you a 2-day hotel hotel/coupon/local cruise/tour for around $90/person, which is a good deal-- but nothing you can't get at any online travel-service.

If you're someone who likes to travel for no reason, you might like it-- but I wouldn't buy a pig in a poke.
