At least I have people ringing me telling me I have!! Thing is, they appear to be calling from Florida about it...the first one I just simply could not understand because of his accent, the second rang yesterday, but I HAD to leave and get to work, so he's ringing again.

I am thinking it may well be some sort of scam, but just in case it isn't, I thought it's fun to dream, eh?

Thing is, IF It's true...I'd be a lot closer to places like New York and New Mexico and such than I am now!

@dlowan,
Don't get your hopes up to high wabbit, the guy seem to be doing the rounds of our town, my wife had a similar call the other day but when she pressed him for details he disconnected the call.

I suspect a scam, too.

However, if you did go to Florida, it would depend on where in Florida you were. The Florida panhandle and St. Augustine have nice beaches, but not much else in the way of tourist attractions. Central Florida, from Tampa through Orlando to Titusville/Cocoa Beach/Cape Canaveral is probably the biggest tourist destination. Disney World is in Orlando. Tampa is on the Gulf Coast, and Titusville and Cocoa Beach are on the Atlantic Coast. You are getting into Everglades-like territory, too. The Wakiva River is fed by many springs, and you can do a float down the Wakiva (which the locals call the Wah-keye-vee) in a few hours. The water is very clear, so you can see the white sandy bottom--and the alligators (which aren't really a threat, as long as you don't do anything stupid; i'm sure you have your own advice about crocs, and i'm sure it's the same). You can have Disney World . . . no, no really, take it back to Oz with you. There's great surf fishing in Titusville, a nude beach much resorted to by middle aged women and gay boys (or so i'm told--i never went), and Cocoa Beach is a beach town and a party town. Cape Canaveral is fun if they're launching anything, especially at night (home of NASA's main launch facility).

South Florida is something entirely different. The Everglades, very much under siege, is nonetheless a one of a kind environment. The alligators get big there, and the birds are something special. Miami is there, along with a lot of pricey sea-side real estate.

Finally, there's the Florida Keys. Mostly a party area, although many permanent local residents may not see it that way. Key West is legendary as a party town--but i've not been there either.

@Dutchy,
Aha!!! I had that feeling, but I had done some stuff online that might have entered me for such stuff, so it was a remote possibility.

Heehee....must be funny for a scammer to be told you don't have time to listen to him!

I didn't have time to press for details, but I was sure as hell going to! Be fascinating to see if he calls back. It'll be fun finding what the scam is if they ever ring when I have time to talk.

NO!!! An alleged possible part of the alleged prize is time on a riverboat with a casino (my idea of hell!!!) if they added Disneyland, I'd likely barf. The only worse thing would be to reveal with pride that they were sending me to Vegas.

@dlowan,
Oooh, that'd be wonderful if true! I can get to Florida much more easily than Australia...

If it actually happens, first read all the Carl Hiassen you can get your hands on. I find he puts me in just the right frame of mind to appreciate Florida. (Nature at its most gloriously abundant, humanity at its goofiest...)

@dlowan,
Maybe they'd send you to the wrong Las Vegas.. (there's one in New Mexico too, very different place).

@sozobe,
IF it were true, I'd likely use it as a jump off to places I actually want to go...though Nature appeals, and I hear there's some interesting architecture?

It is a scam. At worst, you will be asked to give them some money as a "processing fee." And then they disappear.
At best, but unlikely since you are in AUS, they will bring you to FL as promised but then they lock you in a room with a bunch of real estate salesmen trying to get you to buy a time-share in some project that may or not exist. I have known folks who accepted the "free weekends" at some resort, but they left their checkbooks at home, knowing full well what they would have to endure.

@realjohnboy,
I'd rather be thrown to the alligators!

At least I have them working hard to try to scam me!

This reminds me of when I picked up the phone at work one day and it was an obscene phone call. The guy was making a big effort to make his voice all gravelly, must have really hurt his throat! Thing is, I couldn't understand him, and, because of the weird voice, I thought he was dying and was thinking he'd called 000.

I was intensely empathic, and asked if he could please repeat what he said. He did so after a pause, throat hurting gravelly voice and all. THAT time I heard him, and I thought it was so funny that I laughed like a hyena until he said "Dammit" and hung up.

@Rockhead,
You know what's funny?

The bank I have the Vertigo card with has obviously read the offer another bank is making on debt transfers, because they are making the exact same one.
