Two punk rockers, Johnny Thunders of New York Dolls and Patti Palladin of Snatch, got together in 1988 for an album of covers called "Copy Cats." Patti Palladin has an appealing voice in this cover of "Baby It's You":

Is Christie's version better than Natalie Merchant's? Hard to tell but I do love Christie's:

@plainoldme,
Natalie owns the song-it's that world weary voice. But Christie's is good too.

@panzade,
Speaking of world weary voices, Jeff Bridges' world weary voice was one of the things that made Crazy Heart so great.

I love Bruce Springsteen , so this isn't a knock on "The Boss", but Bat For Lashes does a cover of "I'm On Fire" that just drips with a slightly melancholic yearning that is just so beautifully right. Also, Natasha Khan's voice does it for me. It is sweet, understated and full of magic. I love, love, LOVE this version o f the song.

This is my favorite cover ever (aside from Atlantic City) and maybe even more than that (because of the bass and harmony and the fact that it's Jakob Dylan):

Nick DeCaro flew under the radar for a long time. This elegant cover of Brian Wilson's "Caroline No" lends itself to a torch-type song.

@wandeljw,
I guess Bonnie IS doing a cover of a song by Eric Kaz and Libby Titus, but Bonnie was the first one to put it on an album; back in '72...and she really made it her own, I think.

I heard a terrific rendition of Norwegian Wood by the Nudes from their 1997 album Velvet Sofa. It is not on youtube.

Also heard a great version of Summertime by Doc Watson and his grandson Richard.

@wandeljw,
Actually, not originally Fats, but Furry Lewis who's version went to #2 on the R&B charts and is the most well known

@wandeljw,

@plainoldme,
The boarding school I went to in Wales featured Dave Edmunds and his band Love Sculpture at one of our school dances. They were a Cream type blues trio.
