Musical covers are a valid form of tribute. Especially if they take the original song and add a personal twist: change of tempo, instrumentation, convert it to a duo, etc....
For me, covers that don't bother change anything tend to be the least respectful and most forgettable. The Dixie Chicks tepid attempt to note for note cover of Stevie Nicks masterpiece, Landslide. They could have done an incredible job by making it a trio instead of using two of the singers for background harmony. Oh, well.... C'est la music crappie.
That definitely qualifies. The Beatles were never that Funky. The repeated background chorus and the song tempo of the singing are completely different as much as the instrumentation. Well done!
james blake's cover of a case of you by joni mitchell. i prefer hers but he definitely did his thing.
Damn you! That made a shiver run down the back of my spine (and it wasn't my desk fan blowing directly on me and the strong cup of coffee with five sugars running through my veins either)!

@tsarstepan,
There are three covers of Prince songs that were recorded that even he gave them his seal of approval and they are:
1. TLC - "If I Were Your Girlfriend"
2. Morgan James - "Call My Name"
3. TLC - "Get It Up"

I have a CD called "Supper's Ready" where a bunch of different bands covered Genesis songs. This was my favorite:
