I've always wondered: why so many water softener questions on A2K???

There must be a lot more water softeners in the world than I was aware of.

@mags314772,
I was thinking that the other day...
I'd hardly ever heard of them before i came on here. We certainly don't need them here, the waters wayyy to soft as it is.

I keep seeing little adverts at the bottom of the page for them as well.

A new fashion perhaps? Smile

the softer your water, the closer you are to god.

you should see the water expert guys when they fight with each other.

it's serious business, i tell you...

I've always assumed it was because we have a couple of water softener experts as members that started off posting questions and answers on A2K to build their reputations / tag recognition on a site that is well optomized .

Between the two, it got a bit heated for a while. Search A2K for water softener and you should get a fair number of discussions... some older ones are quite entertaining. : )

Then again, I could be wrong about the origin of the topics. popularity.

I wondered that too. At first I thought it was just viral marketing. But now I think that because we have a few members who sell the product, and since they have been providing actual answers to questions, that A2K has become an actual source of info on water softeners. I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

@sozobe,
good heavens....ten pages of discussion on that one question. You just wouldn't thing it would engender so much excitement.

Almost any time there is inordinate interest in a particular subject it means that we get external traffic (usually search engine traffic) for it. Examples:

Latin questions - search traffic
phpBB SEO mod (has died down in last years, especially now that we don't use phpbb) - traffic came from all over the phpbb community
Lenny Conundrums - Search traffic
Rap battles - search traffic
Funny Signs - Social media (mainly stumbleupon)

Water softener is mainly a search traffic thing, someone asked the question and then search traffic brought the rest in.

@Robert Gentel,
you mean when people do a search engine inquiry on water softeners it gets funnelled to A2k? I am a non-computer savant for sure

@mags314772,
Yes, there are a lot of them out there, and apparently the Fleck 5600-UpsideDown Inverter Model 5 is the creme de la creme. Ah, I'm sure one of those so-called experts will be along any minute now to deride my choice (they are quite acerbic), probably even insist it doesn't exist (!!!), but I think what I think... no matter that I've never owned, operated, or even seen a water-softener - if they can have an opinion, then by God, so can I!

Hmm. I say we for a reverse raid. We storm the rainsoft forums and start talking about divisive social issues.

All I want to know is... Whose comin' with me?

@Diest TKO,
I have a bit of a problem with this. Great idea, though!

I've marked down every water softener thread I see - so I have to wait for some new ones to pop up.

@margo,
Me too, because they seem to go on forever. Crossword puzzle questions are short, but their authors keep coming back for more. I ignore them.

@roger,
We're working on figuring out a way to let users filter whole tags. So one could opt out of water softening or crosswords entirely.

I think that would make both camps a lot happier.

Same here, margo. I click thumbs down on those threads automatically. Those and the interminable crossword threads. Never even look at the content. Just -- bam! -- one dead thread.
