Because of the Winter Olympics the powers that be have decreed a shut down for February 13th - 28th. To compensate for the missing time I must teach 1:45 more per day, although I am paid overtime for it.
I'm finding that not only is it wearisome to explain technical subjects / math for so long, but I'm getting a fair number of edgy students not wanting to adhere to the usual courtesies such as no food or drink in class, no cell phones, punctuality, and other common courtesies.
Not only that but I'm not sure about the level of comprehension / absorption when the teaching day is from 7:00 am to 3:15 pm.
The age group is in the 20 to 40 range as is usual but the number of students lining up at my desk looking for clarification at the end of the day means even more stress and time than the extended teaching hours might suggest.
Any ideas on how to keep me running right? I find that I just get really tired and hungry and worn out.

I don't really have any good suggestions, except allow a 5 minute break, and then eat a Power bar, or something similar.
I picked up on the fact that you're being paid overtime, etc. Do you know if this will happen with the public school teachers as well? If so, I see yet another "hidden Olympic cost" than our delightful Mr. Campbell hasn't highlighted as an additional expense for us beleagured taxpayers must bear.
Really good points as I am not sure what public highschools and public universities are doing to work around this.
Truth be told I am not sure if the technical institute I teach at is classified as public or private given it gets funds from both sectors. All us instructors are members of the BCGEU so I might assume it's public?

I would assume, unless someone was on contract.
BCGEU is the Government Employees Union.
@Reyn,
Sounds reasonable, any-who even though I am not a resident of Vancouver and thus could not vote for or against the Winter Olympics, we-all had the opportunity to vote on whether the institute would close.
Needless to say I voted against the closing, but when you factor in that they really wanted to use the lots for Olympic parking, I am not sure my voice nor any of the other instructor's voices were given more than a cursory nod.
As luck would have it I just got the damn flu (damn disease carrying students)!
@Chumly,
you should wear a mask.
if you did it right, you could even make it a fashion statement.
you know, like zorro or quincy md or ...
Not sure if this is possible but....
Theory and theoretical themes in the mornings.
Practical stuff in the afternoons. practical might mean how the theory is commonly applied in the field.
Make afternoon sessions more interactive.
@dadpad,
There are a number of scheduled lab times, but I cannot change when they happen, and none of them are in-class, they are all in the specialized lab rooms...very nice idea though!
@Rockhead,
There are a number of official notifications informing students to stay home if sick...but they have little impact. The problem being if students miss a few days their chances of learning the missing material in the remaining time is generally not promising.
@Chumly,
yeah.
I been to school a little bit once...
are you masculine enough to pull off a scarf?
(you could make an antibiotic shield with it)
@Rockhead,
I'm masculine enough to pull off panties.
@Chumly,
those are just words without pictures to back them up, my friend...
(and they are pants in britain...)
@Chumly,
SIT DOWN STRIKE!
Sit down strike! Sit down strike! Sit down strike! Sit down strike!
@Rockhead,
I've pulled off many a pantie in my day, and thus done duty as a prolific pollinator for the betterment of the species.
@Chumly,
with a condom then?
(this is kinda getting raunchy)

Everywhere is freaks and hairies
Dykes and fairies, tell me where is sanity
Tax the rich, feed the poor
Till there are no rich no more?
I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you
Population keeps on breeding
Nation bleeding, still more feeding economy
Life is funny, skies are sunny
Bees make honey, who needs money, Monopoly
I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you
World pollution, there's no solution

Just black and white, rich or poor
Them and us, stop the war
I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
