Forensic data being what it is, there should be some sort of a pattern that indicates that Santa came down with his ass facing the hearth opening so hed back out and then turn. The body bends better that way and santa could have his bag on his back resting, while he uses his hands to come out of the hearth. ANy hand prints? Id suspect footprints just coming out of a small hearth like that.

Look at the picture of the fireplace... see on the right hand side of the photo , just next to the black wire?
That is a hand print. I covered my hand with soot, sat down with the chimney to my back and literally pulled myself up with just the dirty hand.

You know what she said when she saw it?

everything is cleaned up, but the hand print remains.

Keep yer story simple with the kids. They will suspect any slight deviation in yer logic. You could use some water soluble varnish to seal Santas handprint in the brick. (It will come out later with a plastic solvent in later years when its maybe no longer needed.
