@tali,
i'd guess they're not used much these days

Hank is actually a contraction of Henry a lot of times, like Bill for William or Dick for Richard

@tali,
Clancy is actually an Irish name, not very common in the USA these days.

And, as dj has already pointed out, Hank is generally a nickname for anyone named Henry. So you do see some 'Hanks' around but that's not their name on their birth certificate or driver's license.

Tali: A Forname is called a First Name or Common Name in America.

http://www.namestatistics.com/

Use the above line to find out the frequency of any name.
Hank comes in at 983rd most common.
Clancy is pegged at very rare.

@Joe Nation,
Joe, I don't know how accurate that website is.

I searched for my name, Joyce and it came up 49th out out of 4275 female names.
That really doesn't seem right.
and Mary being the most popular female name? I don't think it's been that for a long time.

I agree Joe's list is old. I think Emma was ranked the most popular name for girls last year. When I was growing up it was Jennifer - I had 8 of them in my 9th grade homeroom class and three of them had the same last name. I've never met a human named Clancy, but I did meet a stud ram with that name a few years back.
I like Hank Clancy for the name of a PI.

@sozobe,
That is an interesting site.

Under the list of sibling names that go with a particular name - all of my siblings but one were listed: James, David, Laura and Sarah - only Catherine was missing.

And I happened to name my two children (Joseph and Olivia) names that were also listed as appropriate sibling names for my name - so I guess that means that our names sound good together- who would have guessed?

Henry is a very popular boy's name in England - but I've never heard it shortened to Hank here. I've never heard of a Clancey in England or America.

Jack is the most popular English boy's name and Olivia is the most popular girl's name (for the past three years).

@Green Witch,
I don't think the list is intended to list names that are most popularly given today. It lists the most popular names that are stilll in circulation, so to speak. Mary probably is the most popular name over the spread of generations. From my observation, the most popular female name given, say, 30 or 40 years ago was Linda. I know more Lindas in that age group than any other name by far.
