A Themed Event That Would Be Cheap to Attend

Hiya,

I'm sort of peripherally helping put together a themed event. I had some ideas I liked (a Speakeasy/ 1920's party for example) but some valid concerns were raised about whether it'd be expensive for attendees to put together thematically appropriate outfits. (And the guests love dressing up in thematically appropriate outfits for these things.)

Previous events have included a Luau (Hawaiian shirts, grass skirts, straw hats, lots of fake hibiscus) and a cowboy/ Western party (jeans, cowboy boots, etc.) This stuff was easy to put together by raiding one's own closet, borrowing stuff, or going to a thrift store if need be.

Can you think of something else that would be cheap, dressing-up-wise? One idea my friend and I had was a Black and White Ball theme -- basically, just wear something black or white. Simple. We're not sure how interesting the general decorations could be for that, though. (B&W old movie posters on the wall? Splashes of red, like rose petals on the tables?)

Ideas welcome!

@sozobe,
Have you considered a naturist theme. (That is as low cost as it gets.)

@sozobe,
70's or 80's theme. Pull out some old disco stuff, spend several hours feathering your hair and you're set.

Prom? The women could wear old bride's maid gowns or hit Goodwill, guys wear suits.

Mardi Gras? Beads, masks.

@boomerang,
Love the Prom idea!

Soz, is it a fundraiser or just a get together? How many people?

Venue?

@Joeblow,
I like Prom too! I brought up 70's/ 80's, that wasn't met with much enthusiasm, I like the idea though.

It's a fundraiser. Not sure how many people -- probably 50-100 range.

Venue hasn't been ID'ed but previous events have been in hotel ballrooms/ conference room type places.

I'm currently loving the Mardi Gras idea -- this year it's February 24th, that'd be around the right time (no date set yet). I think the main issue there would be to find out if there is already a competing event set for that. If not, that's a front-runner I think (we could even provide a stack of masks as necessary). (Oooh, deaf party though, I wonder if that'd be a problem? Harder to communicate in masks, both in terms of seeing out and seeing expressions/ grammar.)

@sozobe,
I see where masks might be a problem!

What about hippies? Jeans, headbands, peace signs.

Groovy idea.

Part of the decorations could be protest signs/slogans.

Mood lighting, (Lava lamps?!)

Tie died banners

Far out, man.

@sozobe,
Beach party would be fun especially in the winter: bring in sand, surf boards for decorations, fish stuff - although may be too close to Hawaiian party.

Sports party - come in dressed as your favorite sport - baseball/basketball/soccer/

Horror party - dress as your favorite monster (maybe use left overs from Halloween)
