Scary movies you'd let your little kids watch

Mo is begging for scary Halloween type movies and I've previewed a few zombie (his favorite) films but they're all really scary.

He likes the funny/scary ones like Ghostbusters and Shawn of the Dead but the humor of ones like Young Frankenstein go right over his head.

Do you know of any good horror films for the under 10 set?

Thanks!

@djjd62,
Oh I love Beetlejuice! Great suggestion. Thanks!

I've seen Nightmare Before Christmas and thought it was one of the most boring movies ever. The pacing was just.... off.... or something to me. Mo might like it though.

I'll check out the other two. I love the cover of Frankenweenie. Maybe it's my imagination but from the depths of my memory I recall Stephen Speilberg having made a movie called Frankenweenie back when he was a little kid.

What about all the "Scary Movie I to VI - they're a parody of the other horror
movies. So funny, yet a bit scary too. Anna Faris plays the dizzy one in all of
them. My daughter loves these movies!

don't you think the Scary Movie movies might have too much adult content?

Dealing with cameltoes, racial profiling, homosexuality, drugs?

@djjd62,
And considering Tim Burton is remaking Frankenweenie into a full length film ... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1142977/, the short will get him familiarized with the character so in a couple of years (2011) he'll be ready for the feature film.

@boomerang,
The Birds (1963) ;
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) ;
Jaws (1975);
The Mummy (1999);
Signs (2002);
Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983)?

No, not really! I am more concerned with actual violent movies that are
unfortunately rated PG13 Evil or Very Mad as with adult content (sexual).

@tsarstepan,
tsarstepan,
"The Birds" gave me nightmares, and I was around 18 years old when I saw the movie for the first time.

Boomer- Funny. Mr. P. and I were just discussing Young Frankenstein yesterday. I remembered that the first time I saw it, I laughed so hard that I nearly had an accident. The jokes and site gags just never stopped.

One of the things that I realized was that the people who would enjoy and understand "Young Frankenstein" the most were those who were familiar with the original "Frankenstein". Otherwise, many of the "in" jokes would probably go right over the heads of those who had not seen the original.

Dead Alive is a bit on the edge of kosher for 10 year olds. Maybe a little too scary, but it is mostly just gross (and funny).

@tsarstepan,
My boys definitely like scary movies. Goosebumps comes on Cartoon Networks in the afternoon...and some of them are really great. Also Hocus Pocus, Gremlins is pretty good too. Edward Scissorhands, Escape to Witch Mountain, The Goonies is adorable. Spiderwick Chronicles. The Ghost and Mr. Chicken - they loved that one too.
