@tsarstepan,
Rereading this thread, and agree with your points, re that document.

It shouldn't just be trashed though by mistake or otherwise by someone going through my stuff after I crump - and I am even mentioning that word because I am going through a mass of my accumulated items in the process of cleaning out.. I'll give it to one of the Holocaust museums for their files. It may be one copy of many, or relatively of interest.

But this brings up Shoah. I think that qualifies as a documentary, even if it was over nine hours. Shoah has its denigrators as a film (I don't remember the whys right now), but it was a toughy to experience in the theater (took two sittings).

Totally changing film subject and tangenting - do you follow Errol Morris at all?

@ossobuco,
He's a great documentarian.

The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara (2003)
Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr. (1999)
The Thin Blue Line (1988)

I didn't like Gates of Heaven (1978) which I guess due to the creepiness of the individuals and the couples could qualify for this thread. I turned it off a half hour into watching it. Found the movie a bit annoying.

His latest documentary, Tabloid, I'm finding a bit difficult getting excited about because of its sex scandal/gossipy tabloid trash subject. It just came to a limited theatrical run last week I believe.

@Green Witch,
It's a great primer on the financial crisis of 2008. It should be bookended with another documentary of 2010, Client 9: the Rise and Fall of Elliot Spitzer. The NY's ex-governor's sex scandal helped remove Elliot Spitzer from power and subsequently remove many of the state's much needed banking regulations as well.

@tsarstepan,
Loved Client 9. It said a lot about this country and it's screwed up values.

The Central Park Five (2012):

Quote:
In 1989, five black and Latino teenagers from Harlem were arrested and later convicted of raping a white woman in New York City's Central Park. They spent between 6 and 13 years in prison before a serial rapist confessed that he alone had committed the crime, leading to their convictions being overturned. Set against a backdrop of a decaying city beset by violence and racial tension, THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE tells the story of that horrific crime, the rush to judgment by the police, a media clamoring for sensational stories and an outraged public, and the five lives upended by this miscarriage of justice.

I have deliberately not watched this year's version of The Cove (2009) titled, Blackfish (2013) because it looks equally bleak and is unlikely to actually effect the current state of aquariums and their practice of keeping killer whales and having them perform for large audiences.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2545118/combined
It has a stellar 98% rating on Rottentomatoes, http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/blackfish_2013/

Has anyone here seen it already? I'll have to get around to watching this soon.

Docs about religious crackpots are seriously scary, like this clip about Pentecostalists, Alpha Coursists and other cults who "speak in tongues" by babbling like monkeys in a "mystic language"-

"The Man Who Saved the World." Those of us who lived through the Cuban missile crisis may be unaware of how close we came to a nuclear holocaust. Apparently only one man, Col. Vladimir Archipov, aboard a Russian submarine precluded war by stopping the launching of a nuclear-tipped torpedo at U.S. ships near Cuba.

This is a dvd from the PBS series "Secrets of the Dead." http://www.amazon.com/Secrets-Dead-Man-Saved-World/dp/B009B0L3L0/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1388096472&sr=1-1&keywords=man+who+saved+the+world

I've watched JonesTown... Wondering what kind of hallucination does the leader does in order to make his followers followed his orders until the end of their time. Sad

@phoebe4,
That's why charismatic leaders can be very dangerous when they have far too much sway over their flock. Neutral
