You should indeed not hotlink from sites that ask you not to. It costs them bandwidth, for which they pay, so you are efectively a thief. Also photo´s and other graphics are usually copyrighted and you will need permission of the owner before you post it elswhere.

Sites like Imageshack, Flickr, photobucket and many others will host your photo for free, or a little donation, and they allow you to link directly to the photo.

The same goes for emoticons actually. http://www.websmileys.com/ will let you link to their site, but if I used an emoticon from this forum on another A2K would be http://www.websmileys.com/sm/mad/1018.gif

I'm not sure, guys. (Welcome!) If a site explicitly asks you not to, sure, but that's pretty rare (in coming up on 5 years of posting pictures from other sites). The guy who made this place is a stickler for netiquette and I don't remember him ever saying we shouldn't do it. And a LOT of it has been done.

As I think timber said, I know that sometimes when you try to hotlink a photo you get some no-no image/ message. I've pretty much assumed that the ones who are most against it give that message, and if I see it, I shrug and get another image.

So, Roberta, I think you can go ahead and follow Region's directions to save several steps between seeing the photo you want on another site, and posting it here. If it's wrong, it's a wrong that's been committed several thousand (hundreds of thousands? million?) times already.

Geez, louise. We need to talk.
Lame to the blind. No, wait, blind to the halt. I can do this stuff, so so can you.

Have you identified a photo you like? Maybe I can walk you through it via pm. Once you get it with one, you can do many.

Posting images is one of the funnest things to do on a computer if you ask me.

I learned how to do it and I'm like a caveman trying to hump a footbal when it comes to computer. When you have somebody show you while they are right next to you it's easy.

Computer tip- Never store you Coors next to thh e computer.

I THINK I can walk Robbie through it, but I have a mac, ever so slightly different.

Roberta, you have no choice, we will get you over this hump and you will love it. Trust me (said many people, over the ages).

I'm embarrassed to admit that this has gotten me a bit down. At the very least frustrated.

I appreciate the offer, osso, but I can't put in any more time on this now. I have to get back to work. Maybe another day when we're both here at the same time.

Thanks, you're a good kid (highest praise, from my father).

Don't be embarrassed, Roberta. When you feel like it we can play with it.
when you catch on (if I can, you can), you'll bubble with pleasure.

Roberta, I warn you, I'm going to attack you, blindsiding, when you are most awake, and show you how to save and post photos.

But warn me, so I can be awake too.

It's me with the mac, Timber, which make me shakey re offering advice to pc folk (I've had a pc at work but just call me Lame), as it's hard even to visualize what I used to see when I right clicked...

To describe myself, when I got a computer from the want ads (no kidding, that was my first mac, by happenstance), well, hard to explain except to suggest you visualize my brain as a sheet of ice.

Which is to only reinforce that if I can post photos, Roberta, who is - let me just say - a tad computer phobic while being the brightest person in Manhattan - can learn to, with help.

I'm back. There's only so much dreck a person can edit at one time. Finished the glossary. Couldn't stand the TOC.

I don't have a mac. And I'm not computer-phobic. I'm computer ignorant. If I was computer phobic, I wouldn't have tried 9000 times to do this.

I follow the intructions. I save the bleeping image, and it disappears. Or I try to save it and the save option is blocked. Region told me to add IMG tags. The place where the address appeared was inaccessible. I know I'm doing something fundatmentally wrong. I think I once actually managed to get an image saved and found. Then I couldn't figure out how to get it here.

This is not an important thing, but it's driving me nuts.
