Tutorial - How to post an image.

Ok, so you want to post an image huh? It's really very easy.

For now, you can't upload images to this site. So the pictures you can display in your messages have to already be online (we'll soon allow uploading of pictures, but until then feel free to upload them to The Raven's Realm).

1) Go to the webpage where your picture is located.

2) Right-click on the picture and select "Properties".

3) Copy the URL in the properties box. Then Click the IMG button when you post and paste in the image's address.

Remember that you should not copy the address of the page that displays the image but rather the address of the image itself. One way to tell that you've done it right is the last few characters of the address. It should have the filetype extension of an image file (something like .jpg or .gif).

Caveat:
Not all servers allow you to do this, geocities for example will not allow "hotlinking" so you can't use photos from geocities for e.g.

If you need a place to put photos I suggest an MSN group for now. Eventually we will have this configured to allow you to upload photos but for now this is going to have to wait because photo uploads can easily be abused.

Ok, So NOW I Read Tut,

lol!
Thanks Craven for the tut!

Here is another try at the image I'd like to put in with my

profile:

N9Dvk9TC1gqyhadiQpjf8ZEw/badhairday79x61.jpg

This is HUGE! I did the <contrl+c> to copy the

properties URL and then <control+v> to post it in the script prompt. Do I need the HTML on to get it to work? Is

everyone still in the BBCode?

MSN group picture

urls are big because of the way it assigns the filename and path.

On other sites it might be something simple like:

http://www.sitename.com/images/cat.jpg

I'd wait on putting it into your profile though. When we move to the paid host

(this slow server is free) I'll add a feature to upload avatars. But that's completely up to you, worst case scenario is

that when I finish tweaking the avatar code the images won't work due to some new setting (e.g. I need to add code that will

not allow for huge avatars to be displayed as that will wreak havok on the table layouts) and you'll have to redo your

avatar thingie.

Don't worry about heml, it won't ever be used for security reasons (if people use certain html codes

they can destroy the site layout or even run offsite code). BBcode can do all the needed formatting for message text.

I wanted to have a photo included on a new thread. I followed all the instructions. I checked the preview and the photo was there. However, when I clicked submit, the photo did not appear in the thread. I got a box with a red X in it. What did I do wrong?

I right-clicked and got the URL from the photo that was sent to me in a card. I copied the URL and came here. I clicked on New Post and then IMG. I entered the URL. Then I clicked on Preview. The photo was there. I added a sentence and clicked on Preview again. The photo was still there. Then I clicked on Submit. The photo was gone.

Sounds an awful lot like the photo is on a private site, or on a site wherein you can't do this kind of linking (geocities is one; webshots is another).

Jespah, I tried it from another site--one that's supposed to work. Still nothing. I think I'm gonna forget the whole thing.

Thanks anyway.

Roberta: When you "right-click" on the image, you will see a drop-down menu to then select "Properties". You don't use the URL from the web page that it is on. If from an image posted online, you have to be sure that the website it is posted in is NOT one where a person must log in, such as care2.com, Blue Mountain, eGreetings, and some msn.com sites that are "locked" groups. If a person has to log-in to the main site, then the image on that site will not successfully transfer the linked URL.

One of the ways you can tell if the "properties" URL from the image is in a format that will transfer to another online page: the URL will be short to medium in length and look something like this: http://www.something.com/wlhatsnew_/35984.jpg

If you see the word "secure" in the image URL or if you see a very long URL that has lots of capital letters and/or "fetch" or '?' or '%' symbols, it is not likely that it will work as a linked image URL. Here is what an unacceptable image URL would look like:
http://www.something.com/secure/EOunJDFI_%20_OIEfetch=dll.dns.server+php_?AAA_bDef.j

If you wish to post into one of 3 sites several of our friends use in msn.com, those sites are the "public" sites and should work for you. I have noticed that on occasion, it may take a few hours or a day for the image to become available to link to. I use these 3 sites often to be able to provide image links frequently in my other websites, blogs, and even into a2k.

Here's one from that site that will NOT be linkable as a URL:

http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0TQDbAlEY4dOpT6gh8U8tOSoAN4pjmZwf8wbk4v!gKHu8WngD!RSR2Wg4UfrnkazaPObOVnbeTtc7dZUXkGKnjSHNR0t8P4fZrjQ58AtOLOYkccity78aRw/tapedmouthavat.JPG?dc=4675408263259959175

Here's another from that same site that WILL be linkable:

http://sc.groups.msn.com/tn/69/60/CronesOnLine/6/20c.jpg
http://sc.groups.msn.com/tn/69/60/CronesOnLine/6/20c.jpg

PS. Due to the privacy issues, I will be deleting only this actual link above when I know you've had a chance to see it..... Sometimes it can take an hour or two or maybe a day even to switch over to an allowable image link. I think that msn.com has a system whereby all images are scanned for potential copyright violations and that is sometimes the delay. The usual image I upload there is one I have saved in my hard drive first, and then wait till later to link to another public site.
