Thank u for that.
The communists inflicted the greatest evil,
the most pervasive slavery of body and of mind upon humanity
that was ever witnessed on the Earth. During the times of Stalin,
Khrushchev et seq. I believed that the Reds 'd win, enslaving the Earth
under communism because of the feeble weakness of liberal resolve
or because of deep seated covert love of collectivist-authoritarianism
in liberals in America, who occupied positions of political power.

Robert Welch had his heart in the right place.
Some of my friends joined the John Birch Society.
I did not, tho I supported its objectives.

One of the most joyful times in my life was the collapse n death of commmunism.
I was glad that Gus Hall was alive to see it happen.

@edgarblythe,
That was mildly humorous. I enjoyed that.
(I notice that thay don't do the same thing about the nazis; I wonder Y not ?)

I did not join the JBS because Robert Welch exagerated too much.
He really believed that almost everyone whose name was recognized
was a commie. He was too much of a good thing.

In any case, regardless of his exagerations, alertness to communist infiltration
was subjected to ridicule, as if their spies had not stolen our nuclear bomb secrets.
NKVD and later KGB spies were not funny, nor were American born fellow travellers.

The communists were deadly serious about taking over and enslaving the world.
Thay DID IT, everywhere that thay possibly coud.
This was a thorough going slavery both of body and of mind
with communist political officers as very active thought police. That 's not funny.

my point exactly. he exaggerated. too much.

there's a difference between vigilance and mad obsession.

and that is what bothers me about some of the stuff i'm hearing these days.

To be perfectly candid: I do not believe that Robert Welch
was exactly in his right mind, in that almost no one was safe
from his accusations of communism. That is not to deny
that the communist problems facing us merited our very close attention,
as firemen pay attention to fires that thay r entrusted with extinguishing.
Call it obsessive, if u will, while thay r actively at work.

America had a lot of communists. In the 1940s, I used to live
next door to one who was very vocal in his adulation of his
Comrade Stalin in The Workers' Paradise.

The Cold War was the Third World War. It had millions of victims
of slavery, terror, torture and murder. THAT is not exageration; that is fact.

@OmSigDAVID,
i don't necessarily disagree with what you said. however, as you point out in the case of Welch; vigilance can become tyranny.

as they say; that ain't good.
