Let's hope it has a purpose or all of us armchair psychiatrists are liable to jump to false conclusions.

Yes, Bruce was not exactly that realistic but who cares? Today it would be done with CGI, bloodcurdlingly realistic. Like in the Jaws clone, "Deep Blue Sea." Even then, you had to be aware the sharks were CGI and it somehow took away from the realism. The editing in Jaws won an Oscar (and a female editor at that) purely because it was so expertly edited one didn't really pay attention to a lot of detail. It was just viscerally exciting (but it didn't keep us from snorkling in Hanama Bay -- we're just fearless).

Actually, I don't scare very easily. I guess extensive sales training makes one very assertive and willing to rush in where mortal fear to tread?

Sorry to leave such a tantalizing remark. I didn't do it on purpose. I did it because I thought it was too far off topic. Okey dokey. Here goes.

Back in the seventies, it became very "in" to go to porno flicks. I lived in a small building at the time, and everyone in the building decided to go see "The Devil in Miss Jones." Not everyone showed up, but those of us who did were lined up in a row in this ooky theater.

Well, Miss Jones started getting "friendly" with a bowl of fruit. First a banana, then an apple. Then she started putting grapes into her "private part." It was at this point that I burst out with, "What is she--making wine?" My row lost it. And a stranger in front of us guffawed, as did a few other people in the theater. I don't know what possessed be to say that as loud as I did. Must have been the Devil in Miss Roberta. :-)

LW, I think Roberta's point re: Jaws, which I agree with, is that the fact that Bruce (Bruce?) looked so fakey meant that Spielberg wanted to figure out ways to keep him hidden as much as possible. And the hiddenness itself is part of what makes it soooooooo scary. If he had CGI at his disposal I'd wager it wouldn't have been as scary... he would've wanted to show off his cool creature and would've SHOWED it more. And if he'd had it at his disposal in the first place, the whole story probably would have been structured differently. Etc.

(Wonder when they're gonna remake it with CGI?)

Soz, You may be right. But I think the shark was unseen for so much of the movie because they couldn't get it to work. You're also right that currect fx could have made the shark seem very real. And we probably would have seen a lot more of it, which would have made an entirely different and less frightening movie.

BTW, don't say I didn't warn you about the remark. Way off topic.

I was planning on going to Brazil, and then I saw City of God, so I changed my plans. Also, just because it came up, The Devil in Miss Jones III was so bad, it turned me off porn forever. Laughing

I think your remark was hilarious, Roberta. A little bit fruity, but a vintage tale nevertheless. Very Happy

Now, back to Jaws. On a Universal (I think it was Universal) Studios Tour with my daughter, one of the main attractions was Bruce. He was supposed to pop out of the water and I guess swallow the fisherman in a boat floating there. I say "I guess swallow", because Bruce popped up and immediately sank and all we saw was the little fisherman sailing in his boat. My daughter let out a loud guffaw and the rest of the tourists all began booing, and although we did get to see the Red Sea parting afterward, Jaws was the highlight of the tour.

Something went amiss -- the fisherman is suppose to capsize and Bruce comes roaring up beside the boat, menacing with his mouth agape.

The film "Deep Blue Sea" was basically "Jaws" with CGI although a different premise as far as research being done aboard a large ocean vessel to create a more intelligent shark. They, of course, get loose and raise havoc. Benchly's original novel and somewhat in the film brought out the idea that the shark is smarter that given credit for. The shark CGI is very good and it's a fairly good action adventure but not of the quality of "Jaws."

Raggedy, Glad you like the local wine. :-) How fitting that Bruce fell victim to yet another mechanical failure.

It seemed to me that the shark in Jaws was given a consciousness. It was out for vengeance, kind of like a nonmammalian Moby Dick.

The sharks in Deep Blue Sea did in fact have a kind of consciousness. A greatly heightened intelligence. But, as LW rightly points out, Deep Blue Sea was not even close to Jaws in terms of quality. Too many elements were lacking.
