My husband once put together a dog crate of plywood - a fairly big space with an entry 'corridor' to it, a slanted roof, whole thing set up off the ground. Then he covered it with roofing material. The roof had hinges, for opening and washing the interior.
Looked like a 40's architect's place.


Check dog houses out online, and look for home made ones.

You could, but if the material is plywood and allows for a moderate size dog, it is going to be very heavy.
