Wiener dogs fill in for their human counterparts in a replica hall of the United Nations' Commission on Human Rights. "Dachshund UN" is a large-scale architectural installation at the Next Wave Festival in Melbourne, Australia, by artist Bennett Miller, who substitutes a dachshund for each of the national delegates at the UN Commission. According to the festival's program, Miller's installation "examines the role of the United Nations as a risk-management organization." It is, the marketing material continues, a place "where 47 specially recruited dachshunds will engage in rigorous debate."
Mega-cities in South America are well known for their favelas. But in contrast to Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, these shacks in the southern Brazil town of Caxias do Sul are not occupied by people. Rather, the "doggy favela," as locals call it, provides a home to the some 1,600 abandoned canines and 200 stray cats cared for by the NGO Sociedade Amiga dos Animais.

When we first moved into the quiet neighborhood, our neighbors to the east were a happy family with three preteen children, two cats, and a beagle named Huckleberry. The children would throw balls and chase Huckleberry around the front yard and into the backyard where we could hear the laughter and giggling continue on the other side of the fence.
