Edgar,

thank you my friend. As usual you are too kind with your praise!

I recognized the Dickens quote in your signature line.
Coincidentally, I gave a talk last week on 'Poor Farms Asylums and Other Institutions'.

In fact, that has been an interest area of mine for over thirty years
(I used to teach a course on the history of social welfare).

Nowadays, thanks to the internet, one can quickly gather vast amounts of knowledge on this (or any other) subject.
Below are a few links that you (and others) may find interesting.

You will however, have to replace dot with a real . in each link :-)

I believe this is the first time I have seen jjorge post without a single comment from the rest of his friends. Surprising.

Not to worry Edgar.

I have become a once-in-a-while A2K drop-in.
...when one does that, ties have a way of withering.

If I don't speak with you sooner, have a very Merry Christmas!

PS I like your seasonally appropriate icon!

Thanks, jjorge. I painted that Santa on a sheet of plywood about 17 years ago. Merry and jolly, friend.

I guess it's time to retire this thread. It has been a good run. I have no more material, and nobody else seems to care, now. Thank you to all who have been here, whether to participate, or simply read over what's been offered. I can't begin to tell you how grateful I am.

Someone asked me
about God
Then God asked me
about Someone

I said I don't know
They retired.

No!

**** - i mean, it's none of my business, but......

Sometimes it's hard to write it down
Spontaneously, like
But it's good to know this thread's around
If you need it in the night
when everyone is fast asleep
and you have words to say
a2k won't be the same
If you take this thread away

Please leave it here for anyone
Please leave it here for me
I promise at least once a week
to write, spontaneously!

Winter lurks outside the banging door
A chill wind blows across the stone moor
Dark as the depths of your lonely eyes
Beyond the trees the kestrel rises
There soars great desire to be free
I feel it now, I feel it in me
Can you not see the blue in my eye?
I search for a way to touch the sky

christmas is coming
the bills are nice and fat
the girls behind the tills
are all going bats
If you haven't got the plastic
The right change will do
And if you can't change a twenty
Well Mr, f.... you

Well, well, still here?
In that case I'll just slip in this little 'poemita' that I sent yesterday to some friends to let them know I was moving.

I'm a little embarassed to admit that it will be my third new house in four years ( "Dad, you have your enthusiasms", my daughter charitably declares)

This time I mean to stay put for at least five years. :-)

Still Moving 2.

Not academe.....no rustic hills,

an undistinguished place,

One wouldn't --couldn't-- say it thrills,

but it now shall be my space.

Some, perhaps, are disapproving,

some are unaware,

to Christiansburg, I shall be moving,

which is neither here nor there.*

-jjorge

(actually looking forward very much to my next move in twenty days!)

*with apologies to Joseph Brodsky

Here's wishing a good moving experience, jjorge. I will always read what others post on this thread. As I said before, I am simply out of material to contribute.

I have no feelings
Cold hearted killing machine
Little kids, cattle, elderly
Often chemically equipped
To leave land seedless and ripped
What ever crosses my path
I shall destroy
When my controller presses
Deploy.

A secret smile in the darkness
Unseen by the hopeful one's eyes
Reveals as the lies slowly undress
Removing all false alibies

A smile of deceitful ambition
An evil that's growing in strength
Man had an empowering vision
And will force it on others at length

I smoked my socks today
And they took me far away
Farther than they ever could
If I walked in them through fields and woods.

Drenched in darkness
Tunnel vision setting in
Characters surfacing
Sillowetts surounding
Witnessing evil faces
As they're becoming closer
Feeling energy but only
Witnessing shadows
Echos occur
WHAT COULD IT BE?
Just as the shadows turned flesh
It all turned white
Regaining focus to realise
Dreaming get's woken by daylight.
